Box office success depends on a bunch of factors, but whether the lead is an outsider or a nepo baby isn’t one of them. Nobody decides to watch a movie based on that. At most, nepo babies get better marketing, but that’s about it.

For a newcomer to be noticed marketing is everything. We know who Veer Pahariya is thanks to the huge money his family spent on his publicity. Abhay Verma, Adarsh Gourav , Pratibha, Nitanshi , Sparsh etc are unknown to the larger audience . Veer has landed himself a Boat commercial but Abhay hasn't despite Munjya being a runaway success.
This is a very good point, but it all comes down to marketing and human nature as well.
Think about it - Nadaaniyan was everywhere. Literally everywhere. And despite the horrible trailer, it still got lots of views. So obviously people will watch it because they heard about it somewhere. Whether just because the trailer was in recommended on YouTube or a reel on Insta or a 2 second video on TikTok, it was everywhere. On the other hand, a film like Superboys of Malegaon had no visible marketing. I literally watched it because it showed up in the movie list on the website I watch movies off of and I Googled the trailer and then read some reviews. Else it was never visible.
The second is human nature. We love to compare and complain. Think about that as well. In your average day, a human will compare something about 10% of the time. Oh today's traffic is worse than yesterday. Hmm I feel like this deal is harder than the last one. I wore red last week to work. So on and so forth. On an average day, a human complains between 15 to 30 times. Such a hot beverage. This sandwich is already cold! Damn it was so cold out. So windy. And so on and so forth. But do you know that on average, a human only praises 2 to 5 times a week. A WEEK! We are very stingy with our praise. Think about your own week. How often were you praised for something in the past week? I mean actually praised for something not just told you make a good point or yeah yeah you're looking nice, but an actual - oh wow that dress looks stunning on you - type of praise?
This carries over to movies and trolling and nepo kids as well. Everyone probably heard about Nadaaniyan at some point and it would make our day to troll and complain about the bad acting.
Forget Nadaaniyan for a moment. Think about that Arjun-Bhumi film that only sold 35k in tickets - The Lady Killer. We all know about that movie even though it's lifetime earnings are only 35k. But how many people know about the film Beyond the Clouds which earned around 1.6 crore or Tara vs Bilal which I think made around 2 lakh or Hamid which earned around 1.4 crore?
