I don't think it's more of an actual matter. Karan was questioning Vivian's sense when he said that - because Avinash is childish and he has no maturity so I think Karan was questioning Vivian's maturity level for actually siding with Avinashs nonsense.

And the Shilpa thing is meant to be some sort of metaphor - because initially she did guard them and do things that somehow projected her maternal side. And I think this started mainly with the WKV episodes and them everyone as usual joined in.

I think it's not about the age jisse rishte ban rahe, it's about how shilpa treats Karan and Vivian like "mere Karan Arjun type" which have led to her being called Maa in the show.
