I don’t really get the point of this post. Just because Indian films have never won an Oscar, does that mean they never will? Anyway, AR Rahman won an Oscar for one of his weaker albums, while his work in films like Bombay and Dil Se got overlooked by the Academy. There’s a lot of lobbying and politics behind the Oscars. For the academy to recognize your work, it usually needs to have some sort of Western appeal or recognition first. AWIL had everything it needed to win, but Lapata Ladies, despite being a great film, didn't get that kind of recognition. No one’s dissing Lapata Ladies, just pointing out that the jury chose it over AWIL as the Oscar entry, which seems stupid.

She led a student protest against FTII…otherwise all we imagine as light has made it even to Barack obama’s list of top 2024 movies. Any discerning person can see what petty politics led to LL’s nomination over this.

It had no film circuit buzz, it made no splash with Western critics, and even the Indian critics firmly put it in the 3-3.5 star range. AWIAL has excellent reviews, a demonstrable record of wins at dozens of precursor awards, and is absolutely killing it at the Oscar pre-trail. In what world are these two films substitutable?

If no one is allowed to bring up the obvious issues with the selection process, how will there ever be any changes?

The problem occurs when people start dissing one film over the other. This uproar came predominantly after LL got out of the Oscars race.

I don't see people celebrating AWIL as much as they should. It's barely a known film among the masses, and is being hyped-up primarily in elite circuits. Harsh reality, but that's the truth.

But when it comes to dissing other films, people are ready to put down every film against AWIL. As if, people are 100% sure that it would have gotten nominated and even won the award, considering out negligible conversion rate in this category.

I don't believe in comparing Apples and Oranges. Period! I have watched both films, and I loved both of them, fully within the context of what both films tried to convey.

I do agree that AWIL would have had better prospects than LL. I don't support the argument made by the jokers at the FFI.

Most of the south Asians still have this unfortunate slave mentality.

Seem like TM is factually correcting someone out of arguements not lamenting . Regardless , the only thing that matters to me is the movie must win me over . And in fact from past experiences (to put it softly) , an unfavourable bias against Oscar awardees has rather build up inside me , contentwise as the expectation used to be quite high considering the media hype about Oscar award itself . Now , it has been a long time since I watched one . In BW too , I pick by theme , director & actors not by Filmfare . Besides , it is an open secret that Oscar , Nobel etc. often serves as conduit for Western agendas also . From RRR to Mother India what do you find usually for instance ? Slavery , poverty etc. ! Same for other geopolitical regions as well as other spheres of interest .

"Ever since its inception in 1947, the CIA has been covertly working with Hollywood. But it wasn’t until the mid-1990s that the agency formally hired an entertainment industry liaison and began openly courting favorable treatment in films and television. During the Clinton presidency, the CIA took its Hollywood strategy to a new level—trying to take more control of its own mythmaking"

"It is funny how the Oscars, a supposedly apolitical event, are as divisive and controversial as US elections"
