Navjot Kaur Sidhu, wife of Congress leader and former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu, has been served with Rs 850 crore notice by the Chhattisgarh Civil Society (CCS) over claims made by her husband regarding her battle with stage 4 cancer.

The CCS has demanded an apology from Sidhu and threatened legal action against Kaur unless she presents evidence to support the controversial claims, made by her husband, within seven days

The controversy began when Sidhu credited a strict diet, including natural remedies such as neem, turmeric, lemon, water, and beetroot, for helping his wife overcome her cancer.

Sidhu’s statement, which was made in an interview, sparked significant backlash from medical professionals, including oncologists, who strongly disagreed with these unverified claims.

Chhattisgarh Civil Society Convener Dr. Kuldeep Solanki issued a statement highlighting the dangers of promoting such unproven methods. The society argued that misrepresentation of cancer treatment could endanger the health of other patients, as per Business Standard report. Dr. Solanki further warned that false claims about alternative cancer treatments could cause confusion and encourage cancer patients to stop their prescribed medication, putting their lives at greater risk.

In response to the controversy, Navjot Singh Sidhu on Monday had clarified his earlier comments. The Congress leader posted a video message on social media, assuring the public that the diet plan followed by his wife was implemented in consultation with medical professionals. He stressed that the diet was not an alternative to medical treatment but rather a supportive measure alongside conventional therapies.

Sidhu explained that his wife’s treatment included surgeries, chemotherapy, and hormonal therapy, with the diet serving as an additional “facilitator in the treatment" process.

Sidhu further stated, “I want to say that a doctor is like God to me, and doctors have always been my priority. I have a doctor (Navjot Kaur Sidhu) at home. Whatever we have done was done with the consultation of doctors in a collaborative process."

On November 21, Sidhu had earlier announced in Amritsar that his wife had been declared cancer-free. He credited lifestyle and dietary changes as crucial factors in her recovery. However, leading oncologists from Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai have continued to caution against relying on such unproven remedies.

That's a lot of money.

On a side note, people should stop spreading unproven methods, which have a history of delaying patients getting the best available treatment at the right time, specifically cancer. Also, have some basic knowledge of cancer and its treatment; ◆ Cancer cells are your own cells in rogue mode. ◆ No two cancers are the same. ◆ They won't go into programmed cell death (Apoptosis - happens to damaged cells or cells with unfavourable mutation), ◆ Divide uncontrollably and indefinitely ◆ Bypass or trick your immune system to not attack on them ◆ Spread from their origin organ to other part of the body (Metastasis) ◆ It's not a pathogen with a different genome but hepatitis B and C viruses, papillomavirus, EBV herpes virus infection can lead to cancer ◆ Consult the doctor before taking supplements, herbs, or vitamins during chemo because It can negatively interfere with the chemo rather than complement it. ◆ Cancer is not a new disease; it is older than humans (Bone cancer was found in a 1.7 million-year-old hominin).

Chemotherapy drug's active ingredients are obviously extracted from nature, such as Pacletaxel/Taxol derived from Pacific yew tree bark and Eribulin from sea sponges. Curcumin from Turmeric is still being researched, but those Bharat Aggarwal's research results turned out to be fraudulent (MD Anderson Cancer Center retracted his papers). Doctors administer drugs according to the timing of the cell phases of the individual. Consuming Pacific yew tree bark or sea sponge (as supplements) won't cure cancer; similarly, eating a lot of turmeric or turmeric supplements wither (might damage the liver, though). Remember, anything excess is poison, even water.

Most chemo targets rapidly dividing cells, but it might damage normal, healthy cells that exhibit such behaviour, such as gut lining cells and hair follicles. That's why people who undergo chemo lose their body hair or have digestive symptoms; they will recover once the treatment is done. Our best bet for cancer treatment in the future is probably diagnosis and personalised treatment by genome sequencing and Immunotherapy (checkpoint Inhibitors).

I am glad, its one thing to try natural remedies on the side but spreading that as a fact and give full credit of her cure to neem ke paan and lemon water is not ok. There are too many people who buys into this and delay treatment which can be life and death when it comes to cancer treatment.

Since this is about cancer and natural therapy, sharing a recent experience.

An uncle of mine in his late 60s diagnosed with stage 4 cancer earlier this year, around late Feb. Doctors could not suggest surgery or chemo as it already Metastasized and patient was in no condition to endure the treatment. They went for alternative ayurvedic therapy in case it helped in any way or could at least make him feel better. "Feeling better" part worked for a very short while to some extent except that dietary restrictions (as it goes for any ayurvedic treatment) created some additonal problems I believe. But then things got worse within weeks and he expired in early May.

Moral of the story: as of now it is almost impossible to believe in any such claim. Would love to wait for the day when it turns true.
