Funnily, Balraj had never dreamt of a career in sports. Having lost his father at 10, he sought a post in the Indian Army so that he could support his family. It was an army coach who asked him to try his hand at rowing.

Balraj is India's only rower who qualified for Paris.

That too, within four years of taking up the sport.
