Did he say so? If so playing cricked indeed doesn't make sense. I thought his friend must have saved him and cricket was a coping mechanism to deal with the stress.

Yes, he definitely does say it right after deebu gets into the car and his friends are dragging him away. zarrar's acting and dialogue delivery not that good in that scene so I can understand why it didn't register...
