Once Aishwarya got engaged, she had way more power and standing in the industry. It's not like Salman maintained the distance out of respect. There wasn't anything he could do. Otherwise Aishwarya has gone on record how poorly she was treated by him.

Honestly, I wonder how much Salim had a say in the subject of marriage as it really seemed that Salman had (has?) temper issues.

I think he's loved them all but Sangeeta Bijlani was his longest relationship and he was even about to marry her. Even the cards were printed out, the invites were sent but then Salman got caught cheating. I don't think he can help himself. Maybe a monogamous relationship isn't for him but Sangeeta was definitely more important to him than Aish, Katrina, Somy.
