He is someone who was genuinely angry on Vidur when he thought that Vidur might be Prem's killer..He felt bad for Prem..

He actually cared for Prem, loved him in his own way...

It is the unfairness that he faced that made him bitter, & turned it into hostility..but he was always empathetic towards Prem's family...
