I don't think that's indicative of failings on Kajol's part as much as the audience's and society's because Kajol being unable to land roles outside of her husband's films is true for all of Kajol's contemporaries as well. All the 90s heroines have turned to streaming and admitted that there are no roles on the big screen for them anymore. Kajol has also said this.

Sridevi was the exception but she also was married to a producer. And Rani is the other exception who is also the maalkin of YRF.

Yes wholeheartedly agree. I don't like Kajol in real life and I also think she's overrated as an actress but really, there's no world where she doesn't trump Alia anyday. And I do think Kajol has range, she just doesn't showcase it much.

I say this as someone who has reluctantly come to appreciate Alia in some films but only because KJo has given us no choice but to stomach her. It's become a case of Stockholm Syndrome!

At least box office-wise, there could be some truth to that as you saw in my thread about box office numbers. Kajol has 5 films that were the highest grossing internationally but 4/5 of those feature SRK and fifth is Ajay's film.
