Kevin must be a really nice person offscreen , maybe that's why they're still keeping Owen around....Patrick was hated by the creator by the end of season 11 so Derek was killed off in the most awesome way possible

She slapped and then complained to her husband who was the director of the show. Nothing happened after that matter was then pushed under the carpet.
