I am not sure but personally I feel due to immense toxic storylines ,regressiveness ,bhabhi devar romance tropes , overexploitation of all shows castes for working 7 days a week , and the advent of ott platform with better storylines is the result of this.

Sympathy can't be forced. Once it's dead it's dead. On top of that, the arrogance of the makers is so high that they lecture the audience, and villainize them for voicing their criticism. The majority of the tv audience is females. If the audience fails to connect/bond with the FL, any tragedy that befalls her, or even if the whole world starts taunting her, she will not garner any sympathy.
