Lagaan IS a pathbreaking movie, because of the way it was shot and because of what a huge gamble the story was, it was not conventional at all..I think there was a book released on how the way movies were managed and shot changed due to Lagaan..it brought in organization in the way movies are shot..and there is absolutely no doubt it will go down as one of the greatest movies of Indian cinema..and how the whole cricket match became a synonym to our freedom struggle against the colonial shackles..beautiful..beautiful <3

DCH is a great movie, because it gave insight into rich people's problems and exposed us to a stylish and classy lifestyle :)..and the way folks in Sobo-Bandra live..Goa tourism definitely got a huge boost because of DCH..where friends make it an annual ritual to visit Goa..but the reach is limited to the urban audience..and even in the urban centers..limited to Sainik farm and Malabar hill to Bandra folks..what I love the most about the movie is ofcourse the theme of friendship (the fabulous acting by Aamir-Saif-Akshaye) the interior designing of the houses, even today super classy..and the music..freaking awesome..timeless album! DCH >>>>>>>>>>> ZNMD

Gadar is a great movie (and it took me a long time to realize that, because I was/ am a staunch Lagaan fan for a long time!) because it works for every Indian..at the heart of it all, it is a beauty and beast lovestory, an impossible lovestory for many reasons, class difference, religion and most importantly the partition. I think it is inspired from a real life story, except the guy actually died in Pakistan and did not return home with his wife and it is not as jingoistic as I felt it was, when I first watched it, maybe because over time, I am more of a nationalist now? Tara is happy to convert and be a compliant Pakistani citizen..it is only when they start humiliating India, all hell breaks loose..

Made for the masses as in, made in sync with popular sentiment…made with a story that easily resonates with many people …exploring themes that most people are familiar with …mostly using broad strokes storytelling which is a legit style of story telling …there is usually no room for experimentation here and that’s fine …

Villagers playing cricket to rebel against British sounds ridiculous on paper …it’s a huge experiment which is why it’s reception with all groups of people is questionable

Man falls in love and marries a woman of different religion during the partition and then fights with villain to bring wife and son back - familiar, and easily resonates with a universal group of audience …

FYI that is what “for the masses” means

Sorry for misinterpreting the use of mass in your post.

I share your opinion about Lagaan. Apart from being experimental , it is also a very fun movie. It deserves all the accolades it got. Aamir Khan in my mind is a very courageous superstar - he achieved so much by defying conventions. He's not the man from a girl's dream nor the cool, goon fighting dude which are mostly the 2 persona almost every other superstar falls into.

Problem is that it's greatness / beauty should not be used to bring down Gadar which was also loved a lot but somehow that was the narrative built by the media. I hope that gets corrected with the super success of Gadar 2.

What BOI is doing is the reverse which is equally wrong - I heard on this forum that the numbers reported by boi are usually correct but its analysis is completely biased and agenda driven.

Hahaha le li. (In NimbuMirchi's words) yeh wokde log ne hi lanka laga ke rakheliy har jagah. Anupama Chopra types elitist critic log ko koi idea nahin real India (actual majority) mein kya chalrelay... Yeh log mass film dekhne walon ko launde/lapade ya rikshadriver bolte (as if its a bad thing to be either somehow), aur apne se neeche samajhte hain. Cinema 'cool' hona maangta 🤪

Sometimes, a crowd puller, a BB or ATBB movie could be groundbreaking too, could be well written too

Lagaan is a lesson in filmmaking, telling a rooted story smartly, a never heard before story, risk of all risks paying off AND wonderful music.

Gaddar and the sequel are entertaining with loads of over-the-top jingoistic sentiments and 2 good songs.

No one cares for ameesha. Only some people care for sunny who's done like 3 films (?)in the past decade. Chupp, ypd and ypd returns. His son's wedding functions were good for promotions of gadar 2.

The way he was bitter and ignored what Lagaan accomplished in a recent interview was hilarious.

You just cannot ignore the 3 masterpieces by AG just because of what's your rashee, MJD, even panipat wasn't bad.

2 words for Lagaan. Legacy and Oscar.

Gadar team could never.

Nonsense. If the B and C centers contribute to the BO, it's great for them aln the people who like massy movies likeGadar. But if someone is creating films for the multiplex audience, then what's Harminder's issue? Not everyone finds entertainment in Gadar.
