Satyajit Ray had also called Indian audience backward and lamented state of Indian films. So did Kay Kay Menon, Naseer.

I think in the case of KK Menon and Naseerudin both were bitter other actors became more famous than them.

Don't worry about the Moral policing & Cancel Culture. It's just hypocrisy in its purest form. Everyone has Biases...take this "Holier than Thou" attitude back to Twitter.

Keeping the topic aside, the amount of self hate by Indians in this topic is really unbelievable. It’s shocking!

How about Ayurveda and Yoga? That is probably more popular than all korean skincare products combined by a mile.

Koreans are one of the most insecure about their looks. Wonder why people fall for artificial plastic looks!

Indians on an average might not be top of the charts as far as looks go but that is ok. Better that than cut and sew yourself to the point of not knowing how you looked like to begin with.

natural over plastic anyday.

Inferiority complex and insecurity is one of most sad and unattractive attributes to have.

I think we have had enough of citing isolated incidents of Ash popular worldwide or Raj Kapoor and Mithun famous in Russia or Rajinikanth famous in Malaysia and Japan or SRK famous in Middle east and Europe (especially UK and Germany) or Amitabh famous in Egypt, Israel or Dharmendra famous in Nigeria or Aamir famous in China and Turkey etc.

I have never seen Indian pop culture as wildly popular worldwide the way Korean one has arrived on world stage with people going crazy to know about their literature, food, skin care, make up and even travelling to their countries hoping to find life partners there.

That insane level of curiosity, interest, popularity has never been seen for Indian pop culture. I guess last time world was so interested in India was in medieval era when all invaders set their eyes on India.

Otherwise India has seen interest in only yoga and meditation/spirituality, from global community.

I never saw Indian pop culture, books, dramas, web series, celebs, music gain that fame abroad or the names of Indian idols trend wildly on YouTube, Insta and Twitter daily.

Or people SO obsessed and enamoured that they travel to India to get married or want to know what to do to look like Indians.

The level of fame and obsession Korean culture is enjoying is unprecedented and insane. Unlike isolated cases of popularity of only Ash and SRK from India abroad.

NR Narayana Murthy also said Indians have too much ego and easily use superlatives for self without seeing where rest of world is.

Were they self hating?

I feel second hand embarrassment seeing how we have been fed same type of films, songs and serials for decades, have so much plagiarism and remakes, without crediting originals and such low standards that we call even cheap mimics and copycats as icons or legends or greatest blah blah.

The more one is exposed to original content and one sees how much Bollywood or regional industry merely copied, the more one wonders about kind of overrated idiots getting National awards or Padma awards here and making it to icon lists.

As for looks, well yes most Indians are unhealthy. South Asia has remained enslaved for centuries and is still ruled by corrupt lot. The poor diet, poor climate and poor living conditions may have been a contributing factor in uneven skin tone, generally shorter average height, looking aged too soon.

We even have fruits and vegetables injected with hormones and artificial colours and harmful pesticides to make it grow sooner and look more colourful. The contamination and low production standards and pollution may have a role in affecting health and looks too.

Would you call Buzzfeed India editor Rega Jha self loathing too for saying 'we will always be ugly neighbours' (in relation to Pak) and calling Indians uglier in comparison on Twitter?

Atleast I did not call all Indians ugly and used the term desi which encompasses South Asia as a whole.

No sharp features, chiselled faces and generally uneven skin and always begin to look far older than actual age in early 20s itself. We have increasing cases of premature balding, premature greying in the country besides increased cases of people looking to get teeth corrected and rise of cosmetic dentistry, cosmetologists, dermatologists, plastic surgeons in India in recent decade.

Average desis also have issues with hirsutism including women as well. Probably due to hormonal imbalance, climate and faulty diet, contaminated food, pollution, poverty, poor sleep patterns, lack of exercise etc.

Never seen Korean celebs looking like grizzly bears like Anil Kapoor. They groom themselves well.

Oh, honey; stop deluding yourself as a bastion of truth. Cos you out here throwing so much shade its a miracle you haven't created a black hole that swallowed the world in a pit of darkness.

1. There is a difference between constructive criticism and generalizing and dragging down an entire culture. You are doing the latter.

2. You don't get to blame Indians for the poor health and diet that resulted from centuries of colonization. Medical journals have published papers on how British policies and Churchills Bengal famine led to generational diabetes and heart disease in India.

3a. Go educate yourself on where GMOs and pesticides came from.

3b. Go educate yourself about the movement for heirloom revival and indigenous food movements in India.

4. Rega Jha tried to make a tongue in cheek joke, failed to read the room and it backfired on her.

5. Stop talking as if Indians are the only people in the world to have issues with hair or teeth or getting cosmetic surgery.

6. Yes, I am hirsute like many Indian women. I could grow a beard if I didn't shave regularly. But you know what it is genetic. Nothing wrong with that. Power to women who don't care or conform to beauty standards. You should be ashamred for degrading women who are hirsute.

7. I don't like hairy men and am guilty of joking about Anil's hairy chest. But you know what it is just that South Asians are hairy and has nothing to do with grooming. And many people dig hairy men. You should be ashamed for degrading men who are just existing in the bodies they were born in.

So?

If you want to feel small by comparing with others, go for it. Don't expect everyone to join in on your pity party.

It's great to be a part of pop culture that everyone seems to be obsessed over. It's also great to be into something niche and obscure that only a few enjoy. Try enjoying things at face value for once. Maybe you won't be so persistently miserable.
