Can Indian pop culture ever be as famous as Korean?

I am simply awed by the way everything Korean has taken the world by storm. Their dramas, music, food, literature and even skin care routines and home remedies go viral.

What surprises me is how they are mostly themselves and original and do not blindly ape Hollywood stars, yet still managed to make it so huge.

They trend daily. They top all worldwide polls and lists.

People want skin or hair like them. People want to eat their food. I have even read studies claiming people from West are nowadays travelling to Korea to find life partner as they are so smitten by Korean dramas and want men and women like them.

I have never heard of such a craze for Indian pop culture, food, literature, movies, music, dress, jewellery, looks, home remedies, myths, beliefs etc.

What did Koreans do to suddenly enjoy such a worldwide craze? And what do Indians lack that we have never been able to attain legit global obsession with our culture as Korean one?

It has the potential to, it just needs the right level of marketing. Like people in the West already are fascinated by our “exotic” culture, our food, our clothes, dance etc. You just need the right kinda collabs. You have the likes of a Jay Sean (not technically Indian, I know) with a relatively successful “Ride it”, but all of a sudden it gets remixed in a club and gets crazyyy viral. Look at what Tesher and Jason Derulo did together. Isn’t that similar to Bieber with the Despacito song? Marketing is key. (And obviously, a good product)

Yes, they go there and in most of the cases end up being very disappointed

I've even heard women going there and hugging random strangers on street (I read this in a youtube comment) and not letting go or something like that

Butter Chicken & Naan Bread have done pretty well for themselves. And they still play "Mundiyan toh Bachke" at Clubs sometimes. 😆

BTS is the only mainstream export from Korea. The rest is a tiny sub sub culture. And I don't know about an Indian boy band. Looks are just as important as music when it comes to being a Pop Icon. And poor Indian men are pretty low on the totem pole. It goes White men, Black Men, Hispanics, Arabs, Asians, Lifelong Celibacy, Becoming a Nun, Indian men. So an Indian boy band is probably not happening in the near future.

I do agree. Desi nem have no looks. In 100 plus years of Indian cinema we have had only HR, Vinod and young Dharam and Salman as eligible to be called handsome.

Just 4 or 5 men in over a century.

I do not see any desi man having world go crazy over him and kiss his posters to death and trend his name like crazy.

Or look so good that others want to know how to get skin like him or complexion and hair like him.

They look youthful, cute, have clear, glass skin and almost perfect complexion which is rare for males.

I never thought they look feminine.

But I can see why their male stars are so popular and win all hottest, sexiest polls since last few years.

I believe the rare clear skin texture sets them apart.

Otherwise men rarely have glass skin or flawless complexion. Most of them have visibly rough skin, pits, fine lines, or poorly shaved facial hair and not too proportionate or sharp features.

I believe the glass skin and flawless looking, youthful skin of Korean stars is a top reason for people going wild for them and even searching for Korean beauty products and remedies to have skin like theirs.
