Given the cricket season that just ended, I thought it's a good time to ask the question: how many cricket squads should any country have?

We've seen how T20 cricket has changed the game. It's now changing the way tests are played, but the fact remains that each format has its own demands of the game. Given how all cricketers have various strengths & weaknesses, it's worth asking whether

  1. We should have separate squads for each format
  2. Assign each cricketer to the squad that they are best at, and not play anyone in more than one format

Advantages of this would be

  • Players would only play in the format best suited to their temperament
  • They wouldn't have to radically adjust their style when going from one format to another
  • They would be less prone to injury, if they're playing in fewer games
  • More players would get opportunities to represent the country

It would also make calendars easier to design, since one could have, say India doing a test tour of England and simultaneously a one-day tour of South Africa. I don't see the disadvantages, but would be happy to hear if there is one

One thing that would have to happen, though: cricketers who then play in tests or ODIs would have to be like Cheteshwar Pujara: not play in the IPL: only T20 players would be there. Players could transition though from one squad to another, if they are found to be unsuitable for the former but are tried in the latter

Whaddya all think?

Agree with you.

In my opinion best option is 3, if not option 2. Option one is putting lot of pressure on the players and obviously players are choosing the more lucrative IPL than the country matches.

It is hard for the players to transition from one format to the other smoothly and they are not getting enough time and practice to make the transition.

So, it is good to have different set of players for different formats.

Cheers..

Yeah, it also gives opportunities to more players, who're otherwise playing nothing outside IPL, other than matches that no one watches. We're losing quality cricketers like Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, Krunal Pandya, and have already lost Ambati Rayudu, all of who could have been fitted in one squad or another

Also, given the calendar, different squads could be on different tours simultaneously. Like India could host an ODI tour while at the same time doing a test tour of England and a T20 tour of West Indies

I'd do something like this for India, 33 players, as below. Not including currently injured players, like Bumrah, Pant, Sreyas Iyer, KL Rahul... Also didn't include Rohit Sharma, based on recent performances
