It's part of a trilogy which the Canadian-Indian director Deepa Metha made (Fire, Earth, Water - all three very good).
Such an impactful movie (The Ice-Candy Man is the book, the movie is based on)...and of course, it's disturbing (like it was also Hey Ram to me)...partition was such a mess relative to humanity.
India had sent Earth also to the Oscars (Aamir's first one, I think), but it didn't made it to the nominations for best foreign film.
I also would recommend Earth (+ both the other movies) but they are in no way mainstream.
Until now I liked very much all Deepa Metha movies I've watched (she made also 'light' ones 😉)
