What makes Tara fall irrevocably in love with Ved, so much so that she breaks up with her boyfriend immediately after coming home?

Also, what is the certainty she would meet him again?

Why didn't she just exchange contact details with Ved, if she was so much in love with him?

There is absolutely no certainty, and she knows that. I don't see the breakup as her specifically breaking up over the certainty of being with Ved.

She breaks up with her boyfriend because she fell out of love with him and fell in love with someone else. She had clearly moved on to a different place than him. It would have been unfair to stay with him. There is a probability that their spark will rekindle. But if it doesn't, she has unfairly strung him along when he could have moved on much sooner.

If you're falling in love outside your committed relationship, I think the ethical thing to do is to break up. Even if your new love has zero probability of becoming a reality, even if it means risking being alone, the ethical thing to do is breakup because you should never string someone along.

I don't think she fully realized her feelings for Ved until they parted ways. By then it was too late.

I think that explains it perfectly!

Thanks so much!

Because Ved's/Don's carefreeness, sense of spontaneity and non-generic, non-routine self allowed her to be fully herself without inhibitions. Where every single day was a crazy adventure.

She didn't leave her number because they had made that pact of never meeting again.

She was still processing what had happened right after she left Corsica. She probably thought she'd eventually get over him but she ended up realising that she was in love with him after they parted.

And that was when she broke up with her boyfriend. Because she knew she wouldn't have that passion/craziness/adventure that she craved for with him. With Ved, she got to discover the best version of herself and that sort of raised her standards, so she chose her happiness and authenticity.

I think a lot comes down to two things. One is that Tara is not necessarily a character with agency in the story, she only really exists as a guiding light for Ved. So she has to fall in love with the other version of him, be separated and then get back to him to be the catalyst for his emotional breakdown. If she just meets him immediately and then dumps the other version of Ved, she would come across as the villain. The 2 year pining is an economical way of making her sympathetic. And if they exchanged contact information, she can't really pine, can she.

The other is that Imtiaz is a romance writer. He likes the idea of separation, pining and reconciliation. It's also I guess a not very subtle homage to all the Punjabi folk tales the film cites. He really doesn't write films where characters make logical choices, everything is an irrational emotional decision.

Wikipedia has one 😉

In Jab Harry met Sejal, Imtiaz made both the leading characters the catalyst for the other...I liked this movie even more than Tamasha (storywise...despite some flaws).
