I will have to check on his popularity pre Pushpa. I don't know anyone in my circle who knew him before this movie
Even if some people knew, it would be similar to how people know Ram Charan, Nithiin, Ram or Bellamkonda Srinivas. The last of these has a Guinness World record 😉
BTW, Zanjeer in 2013, a disaster from the announcement itself (mainly due to the director Apoorva Lakhia), opened better than Pushpa in 2021. Its weekend was also better than KGF Part 1. It didn't happen out of nowhere.
The point here I am trying to make is something that has been in the mind of the Telugu film industry for a decade and more. Bollywood young stars lack "Mass Appeal" like their seniors. They (TFI/Mega family) wanted to cash on the vacuum and gave it a try. Charan/Zanjeer, who was on a high back then, post the extraordinary success of Magadheera, gave it a first shot. They knew the director was terrible, but hoped to overcome it with mass movie and remake (of a film that started the Angry Young Man phenomenon in Bollywood) factor. It didn't work out as expected. Even years before, a few tried to get Mahesh Babu to do a direct Hindi movie (post-Pokiri), but he didn't want to do anything outside Telugu, clear lack of vision or disinterest. He has stuck to it so far and finally doing a "Pan-India" movie because it's SS Rajamouli.
Not many might be aware, but Mohenjodaro was initially planned with Charan. After burning fingers with Zanjeer and looking at Gowarikar's track record then, it was dropped. The opening/closing of Zanjeer, despite being a disaster, made Rana Daggubati hopeful of Baahubali's prospects, and he approached KJO for the release. SSR had already had Eega released as Makhi, and even before, he was disappointed that Magadheera didn't get a proper non-Telugu release. Everything came together. The rest is history.
What happened with Pushpa was in the making for a long time. KGF, a film featuring a star that no one knew outside Karnataka, clashing with SRK's Zero, wouldn't do what it did if not for the same vacuum. Or a Kantara. It is not going to stop with Pushpa 2. And none of it has anything to do with Allu Arjun or his so-called popularity without doing any movie. That's just PR. The fact is there is a vacuum, and it has been utilised. History has been created via the Baahubali movies, and things will remain the same way for years to come. Like Hollywood movies, Bollywood will have these "Pan-India" South movies from time to time doing "Unexpected" business.
More than Bollywood stars, I would say it's the lack of the "Mass directors" in Bollywood that resulted in the current situation. And I say this despite Pathaan or whatever they might have in plan next.
