With regards to the show, you are completely right. But this award seems to be for RG as an individual and how she takes care of animals on set (there are several videos/articles of her caring for the dogs) and not particularly about the character or show. Though I don't follow her but if she uses her online platform to spread awareness about compassion for animals, that's still a good thing for her individually even if her character on the show is regressive.

*Just pointing out the difference here, hope there's no argument about her as a person and on animal rights which involves several factors

Jokes aside, RG can be credited for below changes solely based on what she has done (not DKP)

1. Made a delicious comeback on a show in an era where all GEC leads are youngsters, atleast the women are. TBH all shows that do get popular and have middle aged people as leads are because they started when the show had them as youngsters and the stuck on as leads. Example YRKKH. The shows with middle aged women are leads do get recognition but not on a massy level, the only exception I can think of is Bade Acche lagte hai.

2. The show is all about her character, she is almost in every frame and production house with think several times before replacing her.

3. While on screen she is all weepy, her social media has her doing many glam shoots and she invests a significant amount of time on philanthropy, especially for animals.

4. Most importantly, people are buying what she is selling.
