Why the phrase South Asia or South Asian community?

When the film is Indian? Why not great moment for India or Indian diaspora and community?

Is it regular practice abroad to use South Asian for anything from India? Or Indian subcontinent?

exactly it’s an Indian movie and should be mentioned as such.

In North America, Indians, Pakistanis etc are referred to as South-East Asians. This is even when you are filling forms.

Not really. I am first generation desi. And I call everyone desi. Be it Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi or Srilankan.

The point is — You can’t possibly disregard Diwali.

And there’s a glaring increasing Hindu hate in Western media. It’s not even up for debate at this point.

I think I should specified age bracket too…

Maybe you and few others are exception cause literally every desi I know specifically under 30 Is very liberal and lax with their use of desi/brown/south asian as their identity (to my own surprise) and honestly they don’t really spend their social media time on IF or even Twitter (it’s for boomers and millennials 😂)tiktok,Snapchat and maybe Insta more of their taste…

I see quite a few makeup brands started by Indian origin Americans and they mostly label their brand under brown owned or desi etc

Western media has always been Islamophobic.. I guess they have exhausted that Avenue and have moved on to Hindu hatred 🤷🏻‍♀️

My point was that there is no controversy to label indian content as south Asian. Most of western media is ignorant, they most likely can’t tell a Bangladeshi/indian/Pakistani apart. According to them every brown person they meet is from the movie slumgod millionaire

GQ india themselves included pasori and miss marvel under south Asian representation.

and I feel a lot of south Asian diaspora themselves use these labels of desi/brown.

Also I didn’t comment or read anything regarding diwali…
So I don’t see how you can include me in that discussion. I specifically commented regarding entertainment content.

On Instagram, usage of words like Brown and Desi are very common for all those who hail from countries in South Asia or Indian subcontinent.

I also notice how in recent years there has been shift from using Indian subcontinent to South Asia in media abroad.

Plenty of orgs, think tanks, websites and journals have been using South Asia in recent decades.

@bold — by You, I meant article writer. Not you.

Agree about rest of things you are saying.

There’s no controversy but there sure is a deliberate attempt by western media to discredit India and Indian culture for their achievements or good doings whereas criticism for every small thing is named and shamed without the care.

No wonder about THAT...You can point your finger on the Indian government and it's support of Hindutva.

As for the English wording...just consider how the white people (especially Britain and Americans) have grown into a certain thinking of supremacy and then you know why the sloppiness in language comes mostly from the West...

I don't like that...it shows a lack of respect 👎🏼

Could it be that people with south Asian roots unconsciously ape white behaviour...kind of integration?

Of course, there are situations when the adjectif "South Asian" is appropriate...but not in the situation named in the first post, imo.

They are slowly relacing the phrase Indian subcontinent with South Asia. The day isn't far when they start rereferring Indian ocean as South Asian ocean.

All our neighbors have problems with us but they don't have issues if they are referred to as Desis by the White west.

I don't blame Westerners if they find it difficult to tell a Pakistani from an Indian or Srilankan or Bangaldeshi. For us until not so long all the white people looked the same. It's the same with orientals too

When Malala or that Economist from Bangladeh won Nobel prize I did feel happy for them but it definitely didn't feel like it's our achievement.

As for RRR people had problems when the CM of Andhra Pradesh mentioned Telugu pride in his congratulations tweet along with appreciating them for making Indians proud. At the end of the day song is a Telugu song. The movie was a Telugu movie that talked about two freedom fighters from Telugu land and was made by Telugu people. Yet the CM of Telugu state was trolled by Non Telugus for being narrow minded.
