I think it's because, in this case, more than financial support, Ak required emotional support. A bond does happen when someone supports you in a time like that, with zero expectations. So she married him. For the story purpose, I think it's required to see someone treating Akshu properly and like she deserves. It's the only way Ak understood what respect was like. She had never had that before from anyone.
It's not about being an independent, strong woman. It's about having literally anyone support Ak and be there for her.
