I think opulence is a trademark signature of Bhansali. In no way, does he shy away from showing the heart-wrenching reality of the prostitutes.

I have seen in Gangubai also, that opulence was merely to draw in the crowds. He managed to get the facts right even there.

Have to give him credit where it's due -- he's a great storyteller.

Looking fwd to this one!

This is about a red district life and all these ladies were prostitutes living in brothels. They may have had strength of character and bravery in the face of life’s severe hardships and society’s judgments, but there’s nothing beautiful about having to sell your body for survival, specially keeping the time and culture in mind. I doubt any of ladies in the history of Heeramandi was there out of their own choice.

Are you for real?

It's not even about that. Courtesan/ prostitute whatever word we use, choice/consent etc. The point is they deserve respect. The society/ circumstances forced them to do this or any other reason, don't care.

They had strength of character, hence they lived like queens. That's what Gangubai did. She fought for her women. These people saved a lot of women from being raped i hear.

There is dignity of labour and they ought to be respected and not looked down upon.

I never said they didn’t deserve respect or that they weren’t strong women who fought for themselves. I just don’t think that necessarily means we have to romanticize everything about brothels and the life of a prostitute, which is what these tag lines are doing.

Only one word was used for SLB earlier..overrated.

For him to be called overrated again, he will have a long struggle ahead. The cast is tired,jaded..they look like having been out of work too long..

In his overrated time..he could have got Tabu, Mads,Rekha,Vidya ,Rani..at least ONE of them.

It is just sad..

SLB is still stuck in Devdas cum Bajirao Mastani mode.

Aditi looks totally like Deepika in Bajirao Mastani here.

Meh. Bhansali's obsession with courtesans and concubines and prostitutes is getting old. There are millions of stories to be told and he just happens to always land on the same subject.
