I think Mother India was the only one film was really seriously in contention for academy awards.

But apparently it lost out because the film and the central character Radhadevi both look at the capitalist as the villain.

Lagaan may have been esthetically more pleasing but it cannot hold a candle to Mother India. Lagaan made it to the final list mostly because of the campaign conducted by Aamir Khan.

Mother India was truly a global film which was narrated in a very typical Indian way with music, lots of colors dance and drama. It so beautifully showcased the socio economic conditions of both pre independent and early independent India and show cased Indian economic policy which tried to balance welfare policies with infrastructure building.
