IPL auction set for December 23 in Kochi

November 09 2022

The auction will take place in Kochi. The auction will take place in Kochi.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has postponed the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction by a week from the proposed date of December 16, and moved the venue to Kochi. Informal communications seem to have gone to the franchises notifying them about change in date - to December 23 - and the new venue.

As previously reported by this website, the BCCI had told the franchises an advisory on the auction details would be sent early this month and it is believed that the franchises were informed on Wednesday about the venue and postponed date. Officials of multiple franchises have confirmed this to Cricbuzz.

It has been learnt that the BCCI had been looking for a potential venue once the Istanbul plan could not materialise. Finding a place that could accommodate over 200 representatives from the 10 IPL teams and with sufficient presidential suits for the owners hadn't been an easy task in the wedding season. After even considering Goa, the BCCI has zeroed in on Kochi.

December 23 means the auction, commencing in the afternoons, could clash with a couple sessions of India's Test against Bangladesh on what could be the second day of the second and final Test in Dhaka. Besides, the auction will be just a couple of days prior to Christmas.

Ahead of the late-December rendezvous for the IPL teams, an important date is November 15, when the franchises will have to release players to generate funds for the auction. They will have an automatic increment of Rs 5 crore in salary cap but that would hardly be enough to do any transaction at the auction.

The teams will be forced to release some of their non-performing big players and among them could be Mayank Agarwal, Odean Smith, Sahrdul Thakur, Shivam Mavi, Kane Williamson, Romario Shephered, Jason Holder and KS Bharat. There has been a lot of debate over Ravindra Jadeja's position in the Chennai Super Kings.

The IPL trophy on display at IPL 2022 auction day in Bengaluru, February 12, 2022

The IPL player auction for the 2023 season will take place in Kochi on December 23. It will be a mini auction as opposed to the mega auction ahead of the 2022 edition, when the ten franchises had to rebuild their squads virtually from scratch.

In addition to the money left over from their previous auction purse and the value of the players they release, each team will have an additional INR 5 crore (approx. US $607,000) to spend at this auction, making the overall purse INR 95 crore (approx. US $11.5 million).

Impact Players in IPL

Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is contemplating extending the Impact Player experiment to the IPL. It was first introduced in this year's Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy competition and the feedback apparently was very good. At a meeting of the IPL Governing Council, held virtually on Thursday night, the BCCI decided to introduce the Impact Player rule in the IPL as well.
