Shall we discuss about the various myths and folklore related to Mahabharata? I know two such myths about Rukmini's jealousy for Radha and Draupadi calling Duryodhan son of a blind man.

Was Arjuna going on exile for entering Draupadi's chamber while Yudhisthir was inside also a folklore?

Arjun entering Draupadi's chamber episode is there in Mahabharata

One of best folklore which is very common is Subhadra driving the Rath during Subhadra haran.

Actually it is not even folklore but Actually a narration of BR Chopra. It went so well with people that they took it to be true

One more is Shakuni lame although nothing remotely indicates there was problem with his legs

Radha reaches the hideout of Shankhachur and meets gobies . They are very happy to see her . Shankhchur then tries to force the gobies and Radha to declares he was the most hand some person in entire creation.
Radha hesitates .

Krishna follows Radha and reaches Shankhachur’s hideout .

Shankhachur is furious to see Krishn there . He attacks Krishn with his weapons . Krishn easily disables his weapons and fights Shankhachur n beats him black n blue and breaks his bones .

Shankhchur falls down to patal lok where Shukracharya is meditating

Shukracharya is furious to see Shankhachur dead . He summons Akali asur to fight n kill Karishma .

Gopikas return t9 Dwarika along with Radha Krishn and are warmly welcomed by Rukmini, Balram, Revathi l,Shambh and Laxmana .

Later Radha Krishn and Gopikas have a great time together indulging in Raas Leela ..

Beech beech mein Balram is required for Krishna to fool him and Rukmini to be a good and caring friend of Radha. Revati kyun hai iss show mein abhi tak pata nahi hai. 😆

Shakuni being lame was shown in Ramanand Sagar's Sri Krishna, Star plus ka Mahabharat and all the animated movies on the subject. I don't remember if they showed him lame in B.R. Chopra's show.

One such folklore my grandmother used to say that after Krishna passed away he didn't immediately go back to Golok. Instead he lived with the Sabara tribe of Odisha as Madhav and the tribal people started worshipping him as Sabarinarayan. When the King of Puri sent a Brahmin priest to request Madhava to come to his palace, Madhava requested the priest to build the Puri temple and then disappeared. This a very famous folklore of Odisha.

Then there's another folklore of Subhadra being the good and kind hearted demoness Trijata in her previous birth who always helped Sita when she was in Lanka. They showed this story even in this serial.

Lame Shakuni is shown in almost every show. Yes BR Chopra had a lame Shakuni. Someone told me thar DanaVeera SuraPutra Karna the Telugu blockbuster movie by NT Ramarao in 60s also had lame Shakuni.

Another major myth is that Bheeshm had put his bow down seeing Shikhandi since he didn't fight women.

Although Mahabharata clearly mentions him combating Shikhandi on day 8 battle

Wow Krishna can do RasLeela with Gopis but not spend time with Rukmini

However I seriously pity the Shankhachur guy and his choices

Gopis were of the same age as Radha Krishna and performed Rasa with them in Gokul. Now Krishna is an middle aged man at least in his 40s(if not more) having grown up children, so Gopis would also be of that age

Yet Shakhachur thought of abducting these mid aged women for his fantasy and get called most handsome. Most villian you would see abducted young girls or at max girls in 20s for such crime, he would be the only one to target 40 women alone to forcefully marry

There was one more story about Bhishm that he had pricked some sticks on some kind of an insect in his previous birth hence had to sleep on the bed of arrows because he was cursed by that insect.

Btw I had read in a website long back that Hanuman's mother Anjana was actually Ahilya's daughter. Is it true?

Shakuni being Lame in popular perception is a very funny story

Its origin is BR Chopra MB. Gufi Paintal the guy who played Shakuni had an injury and as a result was limping and BR Chopra like his performance with the limp and instead of reshooting the scene where Shakuni limped went ahead with it and it continued and became Shakuni’s identity and got repeated in other serials and plays such that people started believing that Shakuni of Vyasa also limped and an actual backstory got invented that the injury was by Shakuni to remind him of revenge. We see this in star plus MB also

In real MB Shakuni was a handsome man and physically strong warrior.

Shows have changed him into an ugly man with black teeth and limp

People are such idiots that they don’t realise that a limping person will not be on the battlefield Bhishma would refuse to have a disabled warrior in his army. He would not even fight Shikhandi as she was trans. You can forget about limping Shakuni on battlefield

The other is ofcourse Andhe ka Putra Andha which is not part of any folklore but introduced again by BR Chopra in popular perception

This statement was made by charachter of Krishna in Dharmaveer Bharti’s Play on MB called Andha Yug

But in BR Screen play it ended up being Draupadi’s words

When in real MB the first time our dear Draupadi’s words are actually heard in public is in Dyut Sabha

Naham Varami Sutam is another such nonsense pushed into 4 versions of MB by some idiotic Karna fan, while she never speaks a word at all and Karna fails like everyone else

By the way the four versions that have the statement have it the very next para that Radheya failed with Shalya so the guy who did the job of putting in those words forgot to remove these

And we have Star Plus MB giving her bhoot pisach dialogue. Surya putra Karna has the famous Shashtra Haran to justify vastra haran

That is how distortions actually happen and become part of folklore. One fan of a character introduces something in their version of the story that becomes popular and from then everyone else follows that distortion and people soon believe that to be the real version

This is how myths are formed. People do like a part and themselves create a theory

Recently when Taliban took over Afghanistan again, a huge news was running on social media that after Mahabharata war, Gandhari was so sad and angry at Shakuni that she cursed him and there would never be peace and happiness in his land and post that the land which is Afghanistan now, became a land which is repeatedly attacked and never in peace

This is so funny Because not only did Gandhari never make such a curse, she didn't blame Shakuni for whatever happened and more than that the area of Shakuni's kingdom wasn't proper Afghanistan. Mostly it's the area of present day West Pakistan including Khyber Pakhtunwa, Takshila and contains only portions of East Afghanistan.

Proper Afghanistan as is there today was mostly Bactria or Balhika which was a totally different kingdom and wasn't even generally counted with Janapadas of Bharat
