Iâve been rediscovering some gems from the 40s.
Hereâs one I hadnât heard in years, Rafiâs voice is sublime as always, I love the slightly lower octave he chose for this song, it suits the mood. And the arrangement by Naushad is genius, the use of the sitar in the interludes! đ€© Lyrics are by Shakeel, from the film Dillagi (1949) which also has the famous âTu mera chaand main teri chandniâ among other hits. This song stands out for me!
PS: Could you please let me know how many of you are actually active on this thread? I feel bad tagging you all if itâs being intrusive & youâd rather not be tagged! Let me know.
@bold: Am here. Am here... Just a lil inactive but am present! Do not stop tagging me đ

Okay since tomorrow is a Sunday (perhaps itâs today for some of you!) thought Iâd share this fun song that I love!
Meri jaan meri jaan Sunday ke Sunday from the movie Shehnai (1947)
Music: C. Ramchandra
Lyrics: P.L Santoshi (ETA: the lyrics are a hoot! đ€Ł Especially the last line where he rhymes it with Sunday - à€Ąà€à€Ąà„, à€§à€à€Šà„ I believe there was a à€à€à€Ąà„ as well! đ€Ł)
Singers: Ahh apparently thereâs some confusion here, I first listened to this song on radio when I was a kid and the Vinyl version is sung by Meena Kapoor & Shamshad Begum. Some research revealed that the screen version has diff female singers: Lalita Deolkar and Amirbai Karnataki. Chitalkar of course is the male singer in both versions!
The actor is Mumtaz Ali (Mehmoodâs father) - brings to mind how years later Mehmood did something similar: an anglicized Chaplinesque guy romancing an Indian village belle in âJodi humari jamega kaise jaaniâ.
The actresses are supposedly Indumati & Rehana, but I must confess I do not recognize Rehana here. Perhaps itâs Dulari whoâs also listed in the cast. If anyone knows for sure please let me know!
Thereâs a fun anecdote that was narrated by Anil Biswas. C. Ramchandra was his assistant those days and apparently Anilda wasnât too impressed by this musical attempt, so he called him up and asked him what he was trying to do. CR replied: âTrying to not sound like you!â đ
He definitely succeeded, wouldnât you say? đ
ETA: The opening bars sound suspiciously like the interludes in âTadbeer se bigdi huyiâ to me. Does anyone else agree?
ahh this wouldâve saved me a lot of time, but then I wouldnât have had the satisfaction of having researched painstakingly and come up with it on my own (& listened to other fabulous songs while at it!) In other words- technology is great at times but most times the human heart & mind wins! đOriginally posted by: DelusionsOfNeha

there's always two ways to do something, the lazy way and the good way it's the gems you find along the tough way that's the real satisfaction đOriginally posted by: LizzieBennet

But yeah, just in case you need something right away, humming is better đł
Sigh! This page has been so mercurial! đ
In a bid to increase traffic & engagement đ Iâm giving you all an assignment đ
Donât worry! Itâs not mandatory to participate & you will still be a welcome member here if you choose not to! đ But I thought it would be a fun discussion.
What are your top 3 soundtracks by these Music Directors - choosing only from the 40s through 60s? (No 70s and later please!)
1. Naushad
2. S.D. Burman
3. O.P. Nayyar
4. Shankar-Jaikishen
You can rank them in order of preference or simply list the top 3. You can name just 1 or 2 that stand out for you too. In short, there are no rules except for you to say why you like the soundtrack/s you listed. You can put down your most favorite song and least favorite one from each soundtrack if you like.
Iâll put down mine too once I have some responses. Remember weâre talking entire soundtracks/albums and not just individual songs. Whoâs game? đł
