Watching Bride and Prejudice, All the Hindi versions of this movie even 10-15 miles from me are booked of Ponniyin Selvan. It has me depressed. Someone else on this thread was right. There will never be another Aishwarya Rai in Bollywood. (Especially with all the nepotism that has taken over with star kids that have close to nothing to offer). The woman paved the way for others to make their way into Hollywood. And we should cherish every moment of this exception being that we might perhaps ever get.

This makes me so upset! I cant explain! 😭

For anyone who wants a background of Ponniyin Selvan without spoiling the movie for you

Real documented history is that Gandaraditya Chola was emperor of regions around Cauvery. He dies while his son who was born very late in life, is a toddler, so his nephew (son of younger brother) Sundara Chola becomes the emperor.

Chola follow patrogyny so only son of current king becomes the next king as long as he is able.

Sundara Chola has two very capable sons, elder gets murdered, Younger who was also the ablest Chola ever and favourite of the people refuses the crown and makes his uncle Uttama Chola the original heir as Emperor.

Only after Uttama Chola dies, Ponniyin Selvan also known as Arulmozhi Varman becomes the emperor after 14 years

The PS movie is based on a novel by Kalki Krishnamurthy who tells an awesome fictional story about 2 women (A mother and a daughter - both played in the movie by Aishwarya Rai) who are responsible for this.

So a real story is of A very famous and capable heir apparent in history voluntarily refusing the crown for 14 years that rightfully belonged to him by birth and merit. The reason is the fictional story of 2 women

Just caught the movie. Not bad. Could have been better. If younger directors like logesh kanaraj or prashant neel did this movie, i reckon it would have been much more epic and crowd friendly. I guess Mani Ratnam is losing his midas touch. This happens to the best of the directors. Speilberg has not directed a great movie in years. Ridley Scott too. So Ratnam is in good company.

BTW, i was very excited to see Aishwarya Rai. She is close to 50 and looks as great as awesome Although it seems she must have done some surgery or botox to her face as her expresssions were quite limited. She still has awesome presence though.

Hope they go all out for part 2. I understand that due to covid and a big cast it might have been hard for Ratnam to hit a home run with this movie. Don't get me wrong. It is a good movie but hope part 2 is more epic with better battles and more focus on Vikram (who is the better actor when compared to Ravi and Karthi).

Just came back. I loved it. It's beautifully shot and acted. Great story

My main takeaway from the movie was politics, Kunnadavi and Nandini

These two characters stand out more than anyone else. Compared to them the male character came across as less interesting, more unidimensional so to speak

The first half was spent introducing the characters, their motives, and their interpersonal relationships

I must say that researching about Book characters really helps while watching the movie. It can get a bit confusing otherwise at certain points. Thanks for the suggestion @1t1sav

The movie picks in the second half after the entry of Ponni sylvan. He is your honorable, brave, duty-bound prince, A spare. I just think that they could have given more screen space to him considering he is the titular character. Developed his character better. They even rushed through the story behind his name. The movie could have done a better job explaining it

Same for Aditha s character. Though it was better developed than PS something was lacking.

Vanni is supposed to be the audience s stand. We get to know these important figures of the Chola kingdom through his eyes. But that s about it. Again no personal character development

The actors have done a commendable job.

Trisha stands out. I would watch an entire spin-off based on Kundavai. I almost want her to take the throne by the end of it. 😆

Followed by Vikram and Jayam

Nandini is another interesting character. Her interactions with Kunadavi are probably the best sequence in the movie writing-wise. Acting wise I just think Aish could have done better. She looks beautiful and acts decent. But as a viewer, I was expecting more from her

Karthi does a good job of being the audience s eyes into this vicious world of politics and deceit. But that s about it.

Overall. The movie is not flawless but still intriguing. I would suggest everyone should watch it

Very nice to read the member reviews here. Unfortunately, I could only get tickets for Monday. But this gap is helping me in getting more insight into the characters and familiarize myself with their names.

Where did you get these figures ?

I don’t know about RRR and KGF but it opened higher than Brahmastra both domestic and internationally.

It’s 40 cr + net India on Friday. 80.5 cr net , WW

2 Day total is approx 72 cr net, India.

I think Beast opened very big in TN. Did not fare well elsewhere or WW. And crashed on day 2.

Boxoffice India.

Even if we go by the 72 Cr figure, the weekend would come in under Brahmastra.

The Tamil film Beast did fair business on day two in Tamil Nadu asit collected aroudn 16-17 crore nett to take its two day total to around 43 crore nett. There is a 40% drop on the second day but still the numbers are pretty good. The issue is it wont be going anywhere in the long run like most of these big Tamil films recently.

Beast opened much lower.
