Don't know. There are social factors that change too. 3 idiots was set in times when engineering and medical were hyped field for career. Now a days I feel parents have also become more accepting of children's career choices. Moreover with internet there are more options also for people to explore. For example singers, dancers, artists etc can showcase their talent on YouTube etc. So it's not that kind of pressure people are facing that characters of 3 idiots were facing, which made the audience connect. I am not saying that it's completely over. Coaching institutes are still making money from the aspirants, but still I feel people are not treating IITs as the end of the world. So if 3 idiots was released in today's time, I think it would have still been hit but it may have not enjoyed that kind of fame and popularity as it did back then.
