Chavan Niwas, a few days after the hostage crisis.
“Badi Mami….Aaaaarghhhhhh!” Patralekha doubled over in apparent pain in her room, which she is sharing with Badi Mami these days. For some reason, she can’t stay in her previous room. Samrat’s memories are everywhere. And Badi Mami…is regretting the moment she offered to share the room with the fusspot.
Badi Mami rushed to her. “Kya hua, Patralekha? Sab theek to hain?”
“Kuchh bhi theek nahi hain, Badi mami. Lagta hain…”Patralekha is unable to even complete the sentence. Badi Mami has already reached the landing, barking orders for an ambulance.
“Virat! Mohit! Are koi hain? Jaldi Ambulance ko phone karo. Yeh Patralekha ko theek nahi hain…”
Mohit is the only one to react. Virat is not at home.
“Main Sai Bhabhi ko phone karta houn…”
Bhavani Kaku with the signature scowl in place, snaps at him. “Mast ha mast. Pehle ambulance bula. Sai Bhabhi ko baad main dekh. Yeh Patralekha ko bhi abhi dard hona tha. Waise hi jeena haram kar rakha hain, kabhi yeh chahiye to kabhi wo…”
For once, Mohit agrees with Kaku. All this is a few days after the hostage crisis is resolved. All goondas dealt with, some behind bars and others dead, Virat left for HQ and Sai for the hospital.
Within minutes, the ambulance arrives. Two orderlies, wearing starched white, run inside holding a stretcher and within an hour, ferry the moaning woman to the ambulance. The destination: ER of Nagpur general hospital, where a well known gynaecologist is waiting.
Sai, alerted by Mohit, bursts in the ER as the Gynaec is checking Pakhi.
“Kya hua?
The Dr straightens up.
“Well, Dr Sai..I believe you two are related?” Sai nods hesitantly. “I need to speak to you..” Both drs disappear through the wide door and Patralekha sits up in alarm. What’s happening now?
“Oh Ma’am..” the ER nurse rushes ahead to restrain her. “Dr has suggested rest for you!”
The next couple of minutes are spent in Patralekha conjuring mentally. Different scenarios, varying outcomes. By this time, Sai must beknowing the entire thing. She would have come rushing in, guns blazing. Followed by Badi Mami. Who won’t initially believe her. But with the senior dr’s opinion, it would be a different ball game. And of course Virat…How would he react? Throw her out of the house?
The door opens and Patralekha jumps out of her reverie. Sai walks in, followed by Badi Mami.
“Pakhi Didi, Dr ne aapko admit karne ko bola hain. Poora bedrest…delivery hone tak..!”
Pakhi’s jaw drops. What the heck..did that mean? Looks like the deception has worked. Eyes flitting from the nurse to Sai and Badi Mami, she manages a feeble query.
“The baby…and total bed rest? Matlab…”
The nurse chooses to reply.
“Total bed rest. Iss bistar par se utarna nahi, hilna dulna nahi…”
"Aur toilet..bath?"
"Sab yahi par.."
“Matlab...aise 9 months…?”
Sai is saved from answering by the robust voice of Bhavani Kaku.
“Ha to koi baat nahi. Chavan khandaan ke chirag ko surakshit rakhne ke liye Patralekha itna to karegi na..”
Sai, adjusting the pillows behind Patralekha, chose to highlight a point.
“Haan, waise bhi bachhe ki zimmedari aapki hain. Aap ne agreement sign kiya haina. To phir..bachhe ko kuchh nuksaan hua to…Aapko jail bhi ho sakti hain!”
“Jail?” Patralekha’s mouth suddenly went dry. Which agreement did she sign? Was there anything to that effect?
“Maine kaun sa agreement sign kiya?”
Sai turned to the nurse. “Inko agreement dikha dijiye!”
The nurse enters with a thin folder. Sai thanks her, takes the folder and gives it to Patralekha, who opens it cautiously. The document is on the top.
“Maine yeh kab sign kiya?”
“Kamaal hain, jis din aapne bola ki main pregnant houn. Aapko yaad nahi aata kya? Aur witness bhi hain, aapki Aai ka sign…dekhiye!”
“Magar yeh to Gita ne sign kiya tha…”
“Kya baat kar rahi hain. Sign to aapke hain!”
“Arre yeh mera signature nahi hain. Mujhe yaad hain. Main hi yeh form lekar Gita ke ghar gayi thi…”
There was complete silence after that
