I'm not sure if the makers intended for audience to sympathize with Ronnie 😆. She wasn't even an author-backed character really.
My take is that the movie just so happened to release right when there was a shift in thought about good girl vs bad (as in non traditional) girl, and Deepika lucked out playing the not so traditional character. Audience preferred her flaws to Meera's goody-two-shoes.
10 years before, Saif and Diana would've been called the leads. Instead, Cocktail turned to be a Deepika movie.
