Due to cultural ignorance spread by Bollywood & TV shows.. Many Hindus confuse Agni Phere with Saptapadi (7 promises). But no! To reiterate..
- Agni/Lavaan Phere are always FOUR. Each round signifies 4 Purusharth (4 tenets/aims) of the Hindu life :
- Dharma (morality)
- Arth (economic prosperity)
- Kaam (love & psychological prosperity)
- Moksh (liberation)
- Saptapadi means SEVEN steps. Each step signifies a promise. This is the last ritual of a Hindu wedding after which the couple is considered socially, cosmically, and legally (acc to Indian Law) married.
These rituals are listed in Grihsutra, an ancient Indian text that details the guidelines and rituals of Hindu wedding and marital life. So ALL Hindus get married by FOUR PHERE & SEVEN STEPS. If anyone still has doubts that their community is an exception that does 7 phere, they can confirm this with their local learned Pandit Ji.
I can go on about the meaning and beauty of Hindu wedding ceremonies, but don't want to digress. So all in all, god bless the writers of YRKKH for taking this moment to try and correct a massive cultural ignorance. ❤️ This is what its weddings were always supposed to be about.
