Even if you underline, do you even remember them or revisit them later, that's the question? I maintain a notebook ... if I like something, I write it down. Underline I used to do it on text books :) woh bhi kya zamana tha

I never ever made markings in my books. I used to get annoyed with teachers who would make us mark stuff in the textbooks. I hated when people borrowed my books and made markings without my permission or dog eared them..I would go bat-shit crazy on them 🤣

Finally, I concluded that I should give a standard warning before lending a book..and it always worked 🤣

I have a more serious OCD. I also hate when PPL fold the cover badly to read... And leaves that mark on spine. So that also goes as a warning when i lend novels :)

I used to buy lot of second hand novels (long long time back when novels used to be so expensive) and loved the well thumbed feel of the book but still with no marks. Just showed how the reader loved it... Somehow that stayed with me :))
