It's not my assumption that South Indians are more comfortable in English than Hindi. It's a fact. Most of us are taught our mother tongue and English.

And when there is a hotchpotch of cultures, it's easier to communicate in whatever language most have in common. Which would be English. Not Hindi.

Also, those higher echelons of society fund movie making and bring in value. Argue for Hindi all you want, but they're going to communicate in the language they find most comfortable, and most of them say it's English.

Nawaz will be the one being accommodated, not them.

Even in South India there is a large section of people who are not comfortable with English .We are specifically asked to learn the local language to built a better rapport with our patients. Otherwise it's gets very difficult to communicate with them.

I think whosthefool talking about people like lightman, make up man , etc who might not be well versed in English. To communicate with them you have to learn their language. Bollywood consist of people other than those come from hindi belt ad South India. Localites you know. To communicate with them you have to know their native language or hindi.

With globalization, world getting smaller by the day, and most of the people being able to access movies from across the globe, how does it make sense to change "Bollywood" to "Hindi film industry" ? It only sounds like a step backwards.... to make the name sound less inclusive in the title itself before someone non-Indian even bothers to check out one of the movies. Sounds like a marketing campaign that's bound to fail. Me no comprende at all that.

It's not a step backwards. Bollywood sound dumb and ridiculous. I think the name is part of the reason that it's not taken seriously by the West.

Movie is being made in hindi , it is only logical to have people speak hindi on sets. Even if an actor is from another state that doesn't speak hindi, when they are doing a hindi movie, they should put some efforts. Bollywood technically makes hindi movies and these days Hindi movies with Urdu or punjabi songs anyway. If bollywood were pan india, they would be making non hindi movies too.

Nawaz suggests renaming it to the Hindi film industry. Perhaps because the majority of the films are in Hindi. I was disagreeing with the name change.

The B comes from Bombay. So I suggested that if people wanted a different name for Bollywood (I must confess all the different woods present a lack of creativity in naming) it should be the Bombay film industry not Hindi film industry.

The problem with that is movie making is not health care. The actors primary job is not to deal with support staff. Nor do the support staff bring in the money.

So communication will be tailored to suit high value people's needs.

It's nor being elitist. It's just a fact.
