For an industry looking for individual global positioning or recognition, a name should reflect individuality not of being a copycat of Hollywood.

Bollywood is a well known brand with a solid market on the home front. Internationally, it has a long way to go but it's work in process -- one step at a time. Switching the name from Bollywood to "Hindi Cinema" will only do it disservice no matter how you slice it. Will it appease the regional cinema enthusiasts who would rather have Telugu or Tamil film industry on the world map instead of Bollywood? Perhaps. Otherwise, going from B'wood to "Hindi film industry" is nothing short of Facebook going from Facebook to Meta. That alone caused its market value to slump and if Bollywood was a stock, I can see it tumbling with the name change too. 😆

There's nothing wrong with being inspired by Hollywood in some aspects. Bollywood, the name, is great and has long sailed past the "copycat" status as far as its name is concerned. It already has its own identity now.

Wonder what you'd have to say about Korean movie industry that is informally called "Hallyuwood." 😆

I set my voicemail and it said

Learn English or you’ll fall behind 🤷‍♂️ (Anywhere in the world)

I'm all for learning English or any other language of ur work place or place of residence. BUT not at the expense of pride in your Mother tongue.

Well here we'll have to agree to disagree.

Cos I do believe a unique term signifying individuality would be better than a copycat or spin-off term of Hollywood.

Btw facebook was already a unique term. Don't agree with then changing it to meta. Maybe it has some other underlying financial or legal reasons...

What if your daily routine required you to speak more English than any other language. An you’ll get paid crazy like 8 figures. Would you do it ?

@HearMeRoar That is one of the mistakes India made during its independence. Should have implemented a single language that connects every Indian citizen.

Denmark ranks first in the world in terms of happiness index, and when the Danish Cultural Minister conducted survey asking people what makes them happy, one of the answers was to speak one common language.

More to the point, if teaching people who can't speak English would earn them jobs - say, in sales - and get them out of poverty, would you still say pride over mother tongue comes first?

My general policy is knowing mother tongue is important because it gives you a sense of your roots and helps generations remember past culture. But survival is more important.

Ofcourse i will do it. But I'll still take pride in my mother tongue and converse in it with pride wherever or whenever i can.

I still usually talk with everyone in Hindi only unless the conversation is going on in English or with those who cannot understand Hindi
