The Great Gatsby and BALH 2
It was fascinating to see the parallels between the 'match-making' and the 'office confrontation' episodes. [As a Minnesotan, how can I not talk about the famous book - "The Great Gatsby."] The book is renowned for the usage of color symbolism and the creatives of BALH2 have used colors symbolically to tell their story.
In the match-making episode, we see Ram as Jay Gatsby, whereas in the office confrontation episode, we witness V as Jay Gatsby. We see the juxtaposition of Gatsby and Daisy in the two episodes.
The match-making episode is where Pri came in between Ram, and V. Ram and V stood by the large bay windows overlooking the rain outside. The sky was grey outside, and grey signifies loss of hope, dignity, and failure.
V was here in green symbolized Ram's [Gatsby] fantasy for V [Daisy]. Daisy's dock – "longing hope of reunion with Daisy."
Ram in maroon whereas Pri in yellow dress and white stole. Yellow is also the color of gold. If yellow is an enchantment on the outside, then gold symbolizes wealth and high social position. White is innocence. Maroon is not red but symbolizes courage, confidence, and indecision.
When Ram lost V to Shashi, analogous to Gatsby losing Daisy to Tom Buchanan, Jay Gatsby [Ram] went on to gain enormous wealth. But as we witnessed V being Ram's illusion, the real Daisy turned out to be Priya in white and yellow attire, just like the flower daisy. There were no surprises when we saw Ram follow Pri, and then their first fight ensued in the parking lot in midst of the rain.
Pri walked in through the glass door and to the embrace in the office confrontation. She turned and left. This time, Ram and V were standing by the glass windows, but the Venetian blinds were closed. The closed room obscured the outside view. The room was devoid of any sunlight. It was grey again. Grey signifies moral decadence, disillusionment, and bleakness.
Ram is 'Daisy' in green here; Green is hope, new beginnings.
V is 'Gatsby' in red. The color of blood serves as a warning of the violent intentions. Red also foreshadows the insecurity that V [Gatsby] is facing. Daisy's dock – "longing hope of reunion with Daisy."
Pri is in Indian blue and white. Indian blue is associated with loyalty and purity, innocence for white.
Like last time, this time also Ram unchained himself and followed Pri, leaving V behind again, to the parking lot for another round of the fight. This time, though, they both came to the [sun]light.
I loved the use of colors, setting, and parallelism in both scenes, kudos to the EK camp for pulling it through! ❤️
