What Karma? You do realize that innocent people are dying at this point because of Russia’s stupidity right? It’s like as long as it’s not my ass, just drag it all the way to the Himalayas and back.

@Bold: as if India is in a state where it can help. Don’t worry, nobody is expecting such a thing from India. 😳

Of course. That's the nature of sane nations.

I was responding to nonpareil's idea that China is begging India for something. Trust me... the Chinese are doing this to cover their backsides with the West. And also because they recognize a war in the region would affect t them more than it affects Europe or the U.S.

Don't think Nonpareil said that... I think she/he meant that Ukraine is begging India for help, not China

But I could be wrong... Nonpareil's posts are always open for interpretation :)

They might be talking about green efforts to shut down drilling.

Problem with the greens is they don't seem to realize world actually needs energy to survive. If it's not coming from friendly countries, you will have to plead with criminals like Putin. So Putin thinks, with reason, that the West won't do a single thing to him. What's Germany going to say? Go ahead, shut off the pipeline in the middle of winter and let our people freeze to death? Germans can't buy from the U.S. because America froze its own drilling. But at least America can open back at a moment's notice. Most of Europe has no backup plans.

Hindsight is 20/20, and with the benefit of that, we can say it would've been better to continue drilling WHILE working on green technology.

America, my friend, is on the other side of the world. America actually has oil reserves it can release. America can also unfreeze drilling in a matter of minutes and supply itself with oil. Not to mention the largest natural gas reserves in the world. America also has the only army in the world which can defeat Russia (though I sincerely hope we don't go there).

I am just amazed at the short-sightedness of these posts crowing about Indian power and how India should maintain neutrality as though it can afford to. Bottomline is it can't. Because places like India will be the most at risk. Hope to God the people in charge have more understanding of global markets than the peeps on this thread.

But some of y'all seem to understand it and STILL be ready for India to take hits from this war only to see the West suffer a fraction of what India would suffer. I can only imagine you don't believe you personally will lose your job or lack for food and medicine and electricity. That's where this war is taking us. And the 80% of India that still lives in poverty will be the ones to suffer. Not the keyboard experts.

ETA: not being neutral doesn't mean sending troops. It means speaking out forcefully against this war. It means actually trying to stop this madness. Russia should see it's friendless. They should have no market to sell their oil.

Yes, India would be affected but do you understand how much India would be affected if it takes West side against Russia? It is always a trade off between pros and cons. US and West are on other side of the world but India has entire Asia and its own neighbors to deal with. If China attacks India in future, we cant afford to lose Russia from our side. Russia is already close to China. We need to maintain Russia's stake on the table. If war situation comes between Pak-China-India, Russia atleast should remain neutral and not favour them. Russia is not just random country from which we buy equipments, there are many joint ventures. The entire Brahmos project is the cooperation of two countries. What about the jobs loss, economy and security concerns that arises from this? Condemning Russia at this point doesnt serve any good for India. And which study are you using to claim 80% of India is poor?

The west is doing zilch for Ukraine. Whatever sanctions they have annoucned till now are a big joke and just condemning on news is not going to do anything to the war. This would be good only for emotions just like jumlas Modi uses in domestic politics. They keep talking about SWIFT ban but noone has dared to do it yet. Becaue they also know they can not win against Russia now. Russia is clear winner and in few days it will make Europe and US to agree on Minsk agreements on his conditions. Ukraine will never be NATO alliance and West wont do anything.

At this stage of war, India can afford to be neutral and not speak against Russia. But if war escalates from here it would be difficult for India. These things are not stagnant. They evolve with the situation. People in charge do know better and thats why they are not soeaking anything against Russia in the news and had one on one talk. But other than that India doesnt really have power to speak against Russia.

I agree this is a situation with no good choices. Like I said before, I was reacting to the gloating posts which made absolutely no sense. Along with rest of the world, India, too, should hope this doesn't escalate.

There is nothing really to gloat. India is helpless and can just pray that it wont escalate. If it escalates, India will be in deep sh*t

Wonder what is there to gloat about a situation where we are stuck between a stone and a hard place!

Some "Very" American takes on here....like the Chinese economy depends on the West or price of Oil for some reason depends on India's response. "MAGA" I guess...

PS: The World's economy depends on China, not the other way around. If they had it in them to cut China off, they would have a long long time ago. India even after straight up aggression from China, didn't have it in them to ban chinese products.

Also PS: America doesn't scare anyone, anymore. Definitely not Putin or China. Not even India. India is not going to follow the US & its allies diktat & sanctions. It hasn't since Dr Manmohan Singh's time/Iran Sanctions.

Fact is India has much much better relations with Russia than with America. Silence speaks more than words. India is supporting Russia right now by not condemning Russia openly and by acting as this forever neutral and peace loving country.

Bottom line is Modi loves Putin and Putin loves Modi.
