Here are a few parallels.

"Who was she?" is correct; "Who was her?" is incorrect.

"How had he not realized who she was?" is correct; "How had he not realized who her was?" is incorrect.

"How had he not realized that it was I?" is correct; "How had he not realized that it was me?" is incorrect.

I get what you mean, but we would never see such sentences in novels these days. And here we are writing in the format which is used more commonly, i.e in the books/novels we read these days.
