I'm a bit surprised they transplanted the dybbuk story into a very different culture. Outside the Jewish and central European context, the story simply doesn't work except its shallow "evil spirit" layer.

I agree. It didn’t really work for me and I couldn’t relate to the dybbuk exorcism etc.

watched it yesterday. didn't like it.

plus points- no dragging and to the point content

negative points- totally predictable. stupid background story.

To me it's a story of undying love, sacrifice, not of physical possession. I also feel nothing, absolutely nothing beats the 1937 film adaptation of the story.

You're welcome, though it's such a pity we don't have a better quality copy (the restored bits look OK-ish). And the 1937 film is actually an adaptation itself - of a play titled "The Dybbuk" and released in 1914. Some of the songs there are so moving!
