I love how he didn't do the usual coming-out announcement but nonchalantly said he's engaged. AFAIK, he hasn't labeled himself but people have labeled him gay.
I think this is the most meaningful takeaway from this article.
"I discovered my own sexuality relatively late in life compared to many other people. There's no timeline on this stuff. People figure their s--- out at different times in their lives, so I'm glad I did when I did."

"Never knew he was gay"
Do we also say this about straight actors when they announce their marriage? I've never heard someone say "Never knew he was straight"
So we assume everyone is straight is it? We need to unlearn that bit.
I am part of the LGBT community but I find your post a little ... ludicrous. Yes most people are assumed straight because the overwhelming majority are (statistics put LGBT percentage at 10%, even if it's more it's still a minority). Plus till today the vast majority of LGBT population was closeted, so people knew even less about them and assumed them as straights.
I had someone before say "I don't like the term coming out because straights don't have to come out". Which is pretty ridiculous because, straights are assumed straights and don't need to come out. LGBT people are not assumed LGBTs, they actually have to tell people that hence the need for coming out.
I am waiting for the ideal world when being gay will be just normal as being straight, but until that day comes, we do need to come out and people will assume us as straights. :) But I do agree we need to unlearn that. :)

While a large majority of humans do seem to be straight and it appears quite reasonable to accept it as the default, it is not. More than the default, it is the norm. If people weren’t afraid of it or what people would do to them if they aren't straight, we would have a lot more people who do not feel straight.
Sexuality is a spectrum and cannot be seen in binaries. To assume everyone is straight is blithely ignorant, at best. But feel free to do so anyway.
I understand it's ignorant, and it needs to change, but I think what Mahisa means is that it's pretty natural for people to think so, as most of them grew up in a sexually conservative society where people do not even understand issues regarding sexual orientation. An average person from India would assume most people around them are straight as that's the sexuality they are conditioned to accept as the norm.

This was my point. Thanks!
