Chapter 9

“Shiva, aaj please dance kar na. Mere liye? Meri sangeet hai. Come on.” Rishita pleaded with Shiva amidst the pre-wedding celebrations of Dev and Rishita’s wedding.

“Arre Bhabhi! Main dance wance nahi karta.” Shiva replied.

“Shiva jhooth bolna galat hai, College ke annual day pe toh dance kiya na tu ne. Raavi ke saath.” Krish interjected.

“Wait really? Raavi, please tum dono mere liye ek dance karo na. You can’t say no to the bride.” Rishita asked as she walked over to Raavi.

“Rishita, woh maine already dance kiya na. I’m done, tum..” Raavi said but Rishita cut her off.

“Kya yaar, please karo na, muhje bhi dekhna hai ki mere hone waala devar kaise dance karta hai.”

Shiva looked at Dev and Dev signalled him and mouthed “Please!”

Shiva gave in and walked toward the dance floor. Raavi was still trying to avoid Rishita’s request but Rishita pulled her to the dance floor. “Krish, gaana lagao na inn do no ke liye.” Rishita asked.

Raavi and Shiva looked at each other and then looked away before the music played. “Yaad hai na? Right leg aur Left hand, Left!” Raavi said, trying to break the ice.

“Haan. bhool jana hai ki hum stage pe hai.” Shiva said “ Aur sirf tujhe dekh kar dance karna hai, jaise do saal pehle practice kiya. Right?”

Before Raavi could respond, the music played.

Raavi and Shiva were in sync just like they were two years ago. They zoned out the crowd, the noise and the lights.

As the music ended and the audience began to cheer, the two of them snapped back to reality.

Raavi stepped aside from the dance floor averting from Shiva’s gaze.

Rishita walked up to them, “Oh wow! You both were so good! Kyun mana kar rahe the dance karne ke liye? Kinti acchi chemistry hai” She said, unaware of their past.

“Haan Bhabhi, sirf chemistry nahi, saare science ke subjects mein topper hai yeh do no” Krish said without losing an opportunity to tease them.

“Tu phir bola” Dev, Dhara and Gautam in unison as Gautam pulled krish’s ear.

Raavi and Shiva were visibly awkward, they gave a small smile and walked away.

Raavi and Shiva avoided each other the rest of the night and for the rest of the wedding. They were unsure of what the other was thinking and decided to stay away from each other. They knew that if they interacted again, they would end up arguing as usual and hence kept a distance as they did not want to create a scene during Dev’s wedding over the next few days.

After Dev and Rishita’s reception party, all the Pandya’s arrived home along with Raavi who was helping Dhara take all the gifts the newly wedded couple received inside the house.

The family, along with Raavi and Anita were sitting in the courtyard recollecting the incidents from the wedding. Admist the conversation, Shiva received a call and he went up to the terrace to receive it. Gautam noticed that Shiva was tensed and followed him up to the terrace.

“Yeh Shiva ko baar baar kiske phones aa rahe hai? Aur yeh itna pareshaan kyun hai?” Raavi thought to herself. She excused herself and also went up to the terrace.

Raavi stood at the entrance of the terrace and tried to peek to figure out what was going on. She was unable to hear anything but she saw Shiva hugging Gautam while Gautam was trying to pacify him.

“Gaumbi se baat karoongi” She thought to herself and quickly made her way downstairs.

The family chatted for some more time before calling it a night.

Raavi made her way to the Pandya store the following day when she knew no one but Gaumbi would be in the store.

“Raavi, tu yahan? Kaise aana hua?” Gautam asked.

“Woh Gaumbi, Shiva…”

“Shiva toh yahan nahi hai”

“Haan pata hai, main uske baare mein aap se baat karne aayi hoon”

“Shiva ke baare mein, do saal pehle toh chali gayi na dosti todke ab kya hua”

“Nahi woh, kuch dino se kaafi pareshan lag raha tha, toh maine socha aap ko kuch pata hoga”

“Tujhe kaise pata? us ne kaha tujhse” Gautam asked curiously.

“Woh mujhe kuch kyun bolega? Kahiye na kya hua” Raavi pestered Gautam till he told her what happened

Gautam informed her that Shiva and his team were working on an app code for the past two years and they had an investor meeting next week. However, Vinay, a team member, took a part of the code he worked on for Shiva’s app and sold it off to another group of coders who are also presenting it to the investors. The other group was threatening to file a case on Shiva’s startup accusing them of plagiarism as Vinay gave off his patented code to the other group. Amidst this, the investors are asking for an explanation as to why Shiva and his team backed off from the meeting scheduled in the next week.

“Plagiarism aur patent theft ka Case lagega tho kaafi megengi penalty bharni padegi. Hum apne saare assets aur Pandya Store bhi bech denge toh bhi kam padega. Issi liye, Shiva itna pareshan hai” Gautam explained.

Raavi’s heart pained, she didn’t know how to react. “Ab kya? Aur kisi ko yeh baat aapne nahi baataye?”

“Kaise batate, kal tak to Dev aur Rishita ke shaadi ka mahual tha na. Shiva ne kisi ko nahi bataya.” Gautam finished. Raavi was about to ask some more questions but a customer came by and Gautam was distracted.

Raavi remembered the day she entered the Pandya house sobbing and worried that she would fail her final semester of college. She remembered that it was Shiva, who was her enemy at that time, said he would help her out. She remembered that he gave her his notes and answered her questions patiently. She couldn’t leave him when he was worried and upset. She decided she had to help him out.

“Gaumbi, Shiva ka work setup abhi storeroom mein hai kya?” she asked.

“Haan, abhi Manish aur Rakhi hai andar, Shiva bhi ek gante mein aa jayega.”

“Thanks Gaumbi! main dus minute mein vaapis aaungi.” Raavi said as she left the store to rush back home.

Shiva came back to the store and went directly to the storeroom without speaking to Gautam.

As he entered, he saw Manish and Rakhi working on their laptops. “Arey, kya kar rahe ho tum dono?” Shiva asked.

“Code ka revamp..” Rakhi began to say.

“Revamp? Kisne kaha?” Shiva asked, confused.

“Woh..” Manish was about to explain when Raavi came in behind Shiva and said “Maine bola.”

“Tu ne, kaun hai tu?” Shiva asked.

“Teri team ki naayi Program manager. Woh sab chodo aur meri baat sun. I know ki tum log do saal se yeh code pe kaam kar rahe ho, majority toh tum teeno ka ki work hai na. Aur jo Vinay ne jo bech diya, uska hissa toh hum teeno milke phir se likh denge.” Raavi began to explain her plan.

“Ayy Maami ki behen ki beti, tu..” Shiva had enough, he wanted to cut her off

“Hum na Vinay se bhi advanced version ka code likhenge aur investors ko present karenge. I know humare paas sirf ek hafta hai. Din raat kaam karenge toh ho jaayega. Shiva tu bas hume guide kar.” Raavi continued.

“Kyun aayi tu yahan?” Shiva asked her

“Shiva, woh teri help..” Raavi said meekly.

“Mujhse kisi ki help nahi chahiye, tu jaa, mere dimag vaise bhi bahut garam hai. JAA” Shiva yelled and sat down next to Manish.

“Nahi jaa rahi! Theek hai help mat lo, job de mujhe. Vaise bhi minimum salary toh paanch lakh kaha na, mere current job se zyaada. I want this job.” Raavi demanded.

“Raavi..” Shiva began to say something when Rakhi interrupted.

“Shiva, meri baat sun, Raavi ka Object Oriented programming skills bahut strong hai. We have been struggling since Vinay left and Java was his expertise.” Rakhi said.

“Haan Shiva, ek baar soch na. Raavi tees minute pehle aayi and she fixed the bugs we were stuck on for 2 days.” Manish said looking at Raavi.

Shiva took a deep breath and sighed. He knew he had no other way out. He knew Raavi was capable and could definitely help him out. Keeping his ego and anger aside he said flatly. “Ok Raavi, welcome aboard”

“Itni akad.” Raavi thought to herself.

“Kya boli?” Shiva asked as if he had heard her thought.

“Kuch nahi! Thanks for the opportunity” Raavi said and smiled as sat down with her laptop.

Shiva, Raavi, Manish and Rakhi worked day and night for the next week.

They would wake up and come to the storeroom at 6 in the morning, Manish would get coffee for the group, they would get breakfast, lunch and dinner delivered from the house and snacks would be picked up from the store. They pulled off some all nighters as well.

Shiva and Raavi kept their interactions only work related.

Shiva saw Raavi sacrificing her sleep, food and vacation time to help him out of an unfortunate situation. One afternoon, Manish, Rakhi and Shiva stepped out for a break as Raavi stayed back in the storeroom to finish up a line of code. Shiva came back to the storeroom and saw that Raavi fell asleep with her head on the desk and with her laptop open. “Thanks kaise bolun tujhe? Inta sab hone ke baad bhi tu mere liye..” He thought to himself and smiled. He walked over to his chair quietly without waking Raavi up and began working. Raavi later woke up when commotion began as Manish and Rakhi came back.

Later that night, Shiva and Raavi stepped outside the store room to grab a snack and drifted into a conversation about a feature on the app. After five minutes or so they decided to head back to work.

They opened the door and Raavi gasped. They saw Manish and Rakhi kissing behind a shelf. “Oh” Shiva said as Manish and Rakhi broke apart embarrassed.

“Sorry Sorry!” Raavi said as she closed the store room and left with Shiva back to the store.

Shiva and Raavi looked at each other and began laughing. “Tujhe idea tha kya inn dono ke baare mein?” Shiva asked.

“Arrey nahi Shiva, main toh bas char din se inhe jaanthi hoon, tu toh do saal se jaantha tha na, phir bhi nahi pata?” Raavi questioned.

“Arey nahi, yeh dono toh humesha nok johk aur kit kit karthe rehthe hai. Maine socha bhi nahi ki yeh do no” Shiva said smiling.

“Mujhe toh uss din ki yaad aa gayi, woh last exam ke pehle, jab hum yahan padai kar rahe the aur light chali gayi. Phir achanak Dev aur Krish aakar hume dara diya” Raavi said without realizing what she was saying as she referred back to the night Shiva and her almost kissed.

Raavi and Shiva were both flustered, they stayed in silence for a minute as they looked away around.

"Yaad hai Raavi, maine kaha tha ki jab main first aaunga toh tujhe kuch kahunga?” Shiva asked, breaking the ice.

Raavi looked at him and nodded expectantly.

“Agar kal investors se meeting successful rahi toh woh baat tujhe baataunga. Chal, back to work?” He said as he went back inside the storeroom leaving Raavi blushing.

The group had a virtual call with the investors and the four of them took turns presenting. After the call, the investors seemed impressed with the more advanced version of the app and mentioned that they would email their decision after discussing internally.

For the next 5 hours, Shiva, Raavi, Manish and Rakhi sat in the storeroom tensed. They had their laptops and phones open with the notification volume set on high. Each time any of their phones buzzed, they would sit up excitedly.

It was around 10:30 pm, it was dark and quiet, Gautam had shut the shop and left as well. Shiva’s laptop screen suddenly lit up with a notification and Shiva opened the email. Raavi, Manish and Rakhi stood up as they were tensed. “Shiva, Khol na, itna suspense kyun?” Raavi asked as she walked over to his chair.

As she was approaching him, Shiva got up and gave her a hug.

Before Raavi could ask Shiva what happened, Manish and Rakhi looked at Shiva’s email and exclaimed in joy. “Oh my God! Next round of funding approve ho gaya” Rakhi said with tons of excitement.

Shiva and Raavi broke off from the hug as Manish said, “Shiva, Bhai, aaj bhabhi ka khaana nahi please, Swiggy se order karein? Party toh banta hai.”

“Haan bhai, karlo order” Shiva said with a smile and relief in his eyes.

“Thanks Raavi!” “Congrats Shiva!” both Shiva and Raavi said at the same time.

Before they could speak any further, Manish began to play some music and began to dance.”Arrey dance toh karna padega” Manish said, pulling the three of them to dance.

Raavi, Shiva and Rakhi joined in. They danced for a while, took a breather after hell week and ate the food that came.

After an hour or so, Manish and Rakhi headed home leaving Raavi and Shiva in the storeroom alone.

Shiva walked over, and sat on the chair next to Raavi. “Aaj naa bahut khush hoon Raavi! Somnath mein Silicon Valley ka level 1 paar kiya”

“Main bhi Shiva, tu dekh na, humare class ke log or baaki sab bhi na iss news ke baad Rohan se zyada tujhe successful maanenge”

“Rohan” Shiva said as he felt his heart crush once again. He stood up and began to say with despondency in his voice “Phir se Rohan. Tera matlab Rohan se zyaada successful hona hai, samaj gaya. Woh San Francisco mein, aur main somnath mein. Uski job ek badi MNC mein aur mera ek storeroom mein. Tere liye toh hamesha se Rohan hi great tha. Main nahi.”

Raavi got up in urgency “Shiva, tu mujhe phir se galat samajh raha hai.”

Shiva sat down resting his back on a shelf and tears began rolling from his eyes as he said, “Haar gaya Raavi, Phir se haar gaya.”

them working together, waking up super early, sleeping late, constantly on edge, gave me such nostalgia for when they were studying for exams 😭 wow it feels like so long ago when it was like two days ago 🤣

oho kissing (not shivi sigh but chalo it sparked some conversation), and raavi slipping up ☺️ I liked it, I liked it very much

and the last part broke my heart 😭 poor shiva is heartbroken again and raavi still isn't able to express what she feels with the right words - it's all just too sad 😭

my fingers are literally itching at this point, LIKE I AM SO CLOSE to finding 100% love but I will not, I swear to god I will not until this story is over
