Dev is actually one of my favourite fictional characters on Indian TV (not S3 one). Not because he is perfect (far from it) but because he just had so many layers to his character? I will never want someone like Dev as my husband/boyfriend in reality but it was really interesting to watch him from a fictional perspective. He wasn't an angry young man who was rude to everyone around. He wasn't soft and perfect either. He was more of this grey character who did not fit into any mould. He could go out of the way to marry a random girl so that Neha is happy. At the same time, he could coerce Sonakshi & force her into becoming his mom's nutritionist despite knowing that he is being ruthless & selfish. He could go out of the way to make sure his staff is happy & well taken care of, he could land at Sonakshi's house in the midnight because she sent a H and he assumed she needs help yet be cold enough to stop her potential alliance because she might shift to Delhi. He never had this usual arch where he is ruthless & changes into a great guy because he is in love. Nor did he go from a really soft and understanding guy to a dumbass. The best part about Dev was that he could never fit into any stereotype regarding Indian TV MLs. He had a proper point of view & his fatal flaw was his need to over compensate & keep everyone around happy, esp his mom (which resulted in everyone being unhappy in the end) & also his need to go for short-term solutions and be in denial. There is this scene post leap where Dev tells Sonakshi that he was in so much pain after she left him & he was so pathetic & selfish that he wished the same pain on her. That he wanted her to be as heart broken as he was. That was really refreshing to me because it just showed how flawed he was. He was never really the 'hero' so to say. The writers always showed how Ranveer, Ritvik & Jatin were all probably more mature than him (which rarely happens on TV because all third angles are psychos just to glorify the main lead).
He was called Devrath because in a way he was expected to stay celibate for life (just like Bheeshma from Mahabharat) & take care of his mom. Dev also ties up to Devdas because he really was a hopeless Devdas everytime Sonakshi left him. I think the writers sometimes don't get enough credit for how well they wrote Dev in season 1. He was unlike most one dimensional male leads on Indian TV.
P.S. This has nothing to do with Dev as a husband or how much he will suck as a partner in reality (because it's true đ). It's only about Dev Dixit as a fictional character (and am only talking about season 1 here)
