The Ansel Elgort and Shailene Woodley's The Fault in Our Stars' adaptation was awful. It made a sappy romantic drama out of a book that has so much more to offer. I'm a huge John Green fan and have read every one of his books and shorts.
So I watched Dil Bechara with trepidation. I expected it to be worse. But, I have to say, it surprised me. It had the levity which I felt the Hollywood adaptation was lacking.
I mean yeah, it's a mediocre film. Most of the acclaim is due to SSR's untimely demise. But it is not a bad film either. It does the job of being a feel-good film about a romance between cancer patients.
But if it must be compared to anything I'd compare it to Hulu's Looking for Alaska series which is another John Green adaptation. Now that is a good adaptation. It beautifully balances all the light-hearted hijinks and the serious elements.
