I had better expectations as well, specially when someone was claiming to be an expert at Vedas and Brahmvadini but made a complete nonsense about girls being donated and they weren’t really educated.

What are all those mantras of women in marriage about? If it’s donation, donate , why to give Gyan to woman on being the better half of a man throughout his life.

Where else do we find such beautiful lessons for a bride being DONATED.

One of the perks of being a Hindu is ...that my religion has made me broadminded enough to question anything that is derogatory and questionable....like very rightly said...Hinduism is not a religion but a way of life....you evolve with it....and change what is outdated and bring in the new....This is not a disrespect of Hinduism but an appreciation of how empowering it is.....Let us not forget that religion is man made and every religion comes with its own flaws...and nothing wrong in changing/updating/weeding out these flaws to make it better....tomorrow something else might change what seems appropriate at this time.....

Acharya Sayan commentary is that the vedas can be acquired if are undertook upanayana. Therefore, in the Rigvedic age, since women undertook upanayana, they were entitled to the vedas.

Artha ya icched duhitā me paṇditā jāyeta. sarbamāyuriyāditi tilaudanaṃ pācayitvā sarpiṣmantamaślīyātāṃ.

Though I feel the concept of “ownership” wasn’t limited to women alone. I remember Yudhishthir had not only put Draupadi at stake, but had lost his brothers in the bet too.

As far as I know, Draupadi had argued that if Yudhishthir had lost himself, he couldn’t have possibly put her on stake as he himself was a slave. Similarly, Draupadi was aghast because he should have taken permission from her as Yudhishthir’s younger siblings were her husbands too.

Wether you call it ownership or Haq - it doesn’t matter if it’s a man or a woman.. it’s there in relationships .

I don’t think going so back in the past is going to make sense, for one, we don’t have those sensibilities neither can we be very sure how much rights did the women have.

Though the two people things that bother me most were how Goddess Sita & Ahalya punished for no fault of theirs.

Secondly, Tara had an affair with Chandra & had an illegitimate child. Why was she not punished? It’s strange, in.m a way.

Exactly.. Mahabharata took place because an obsolete set of rules had to be discarded. One has to increase their consciousness to differentiate the right from wrong.

I especially love how the writings of Sufi and Bhakti poetry by saints have the same meaning.. from Maulana Rumi to Meera Bai to Guru Nanak Sahib & Kabir Sahib… it all comes down to love & humanity.❤️

How Sufi saint Meer Mohd (also laid the foundation of Golden temple) encouraged Dara Shikoh to translate Upanishads to Persian so that everyone can read this marvellous knowledge.. our history would have been so different had he been the emperor instead of his barbaric brother Aurangazeb!

There is something that S Radhakrishnan wrote in his book called the principal upanishads .. will share it with you..

That’s the best part of Hinduism, always evolving. Another good thing is having open discussion and exchanging views without killing each other for it.

The only problem is misrepresentation of rituals and customs specially in Hinduism.

It’s not the change in the concept but the change and evolution in our perspective. It’s us who understand it better today than yesterday. Like I was saying in my previous post, the original texts have all the knowledge that we needed but we have to grow ourselves to be able to grasp everything that the text has to offer. It is only possible when we keep on working on ourselves and broaden our thinking. These texts are there not to uphold some kind of a religion but to help the human being reach his/her true potential. We all should aim at achieving that!

Actually, Draupadi was asking why Yudhishtira had any rights over her if he lost himself? Could be actual physical question or philosophical question.

In fact, Bheeshma's response to her was, "yes, wives are husband's property." (Paraphrasing, but gist is correct)

She never asked about the younger Pandavas. At all. She never even asked for them to be freed with her 1st boon when she didn't even know there would be a 2nd boon. Dhritharashtra then gave her the 2nd boon.

There are no examples which go the other way nice as it would be think this was all about relationships.

BTW, Yudhishthira was also the husband who asked Panchali to keep Keechaka happy until the exile got over. You get the gist. No matter how powerful the woman, the finance minister of the empire, she was still treated like that.
