Part 1:
Sai stood still replaying everything that had happened in the past 24 hours. She knew that this day would come, that they would eventually meet again and she thought that she would be ready. Oh, how wrong she had been. In that one moment when she had come face-to-face with him... everything that had happened that night, 7 years ago, came rushing back.
Sai closed her eyes, feeling the icy cold wind hitting her face numbing the tears that were threatening to fall. She quietly listened to the sounds of the waves crashing on the beach, hoping that they would calm the turbulent feelings that were consuming her. Alas, the only thing that kept going through her mind was a replay of the fateful night that had turned her entire life around.

He watched her as she struggled with her emotions, trying to hold herself together. Very rarely did Sai let her emotions get the best of her. How he wished he could go up to her and hold her in his arms...take away all her worries and see that beautiful smile of hers light up her face again. It wasn’t easy for him to see her this way, but he knew that she needed this moment alone, to process everything that she had buried deep down within her.

Just as Sai took a step forward to feel the cold water on her feet, her phone rang – it was the hospital. “Dr. Joshi, your patient’s condition has taken a turn for the worse and he is not responding to the medications prescribed. The on-call doctor is attending to him now but we need you back at the hospital.” “Yes, I will be right there.” Sai answered and rushed towards her car where he was waiting for her.
“Karan, we need to head back to the hospital. Would you mind driving?” Sai said as she handed the keys to him and swiftly got into the passenger seat. The both of them remained silent during the short drive to the hospital. Just as they got to the hospital, Karan put his hand on Sai’s... “Sai, I know that this situation and the patient is close to your heart and if you want, I can take over this case.” Sai looked up and smiled. “Thank you, but I am fine and you know that I would never turn my back on my job or my patients, no matter what. But I appreciate your offer and will let you know if I need anything. Now, go back home and get some rest, you have been in back to back surgeries since yesterday and need to sleep,” Sai said and rushed in to attend to her patient.

Sai stepped out into the hallway and headed to the nurses’ station. “Aarti, the police officer that was admitted with the gunshot wound, in room 43, were you able to get ahold of his family member’s? He is being taken to surgery and we need a family member to consent for the procedure. Also, if there are any questions about the surgery, you can direct them to Dr. Patel, he will be performing the surgery.” “Yes Dr. Joshi, they should be here any minute, I’ll have all of the information and forms ready for them. Also, Dr. Singhania asked me to tell you that he decided not to go back home and will wait for you in the doctor’s lounge.” Sai smiled and thanked Aarti. If anyone thought that she was stubborn, they had not met Karan, who was equally as stubborn if not more. Sai slowly shook her head and headed towards the doctor’s lounge.

“Sai...,” Sai’s heart skipped a beat as she heard a familiar voice call out her name. She pulled her hand away from the door handle and slowly turned around. “Virat Si....I’m sorry. ACP Chavan, what are you still doing here?”
