Bapuji, for me, is the living example of this quote by Martin Luther King:
"In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends".
While Anu was still their DIL, his wife and son continued to torment her for years. She faced every kind of abuse, be it physical, mental and emotional, in their hands for years. Later on even his grandkids joined the bandwagon. But this man, despite being the head of the family never had either voice or courage to stop those abuses. He just compensated his failure with repeated chant of "Tu meri beti hai"... And every thing was honky dory for long.
When Anu divorced with his son, he gave her a part of his house. It served so many purposes. His old age was secured with the service of a 24x7 nanny called Anupama, his wife still had a punching bag who she could still expect to cook theplas and massage her feet, his grandkids still had an outlet to vent. More importantly, his petulant son still had an object he could subject to constant humiliations and his present DIL Kavya got a readymade scapegoat who she could attribute all his miseries to.
I won't deny Bapuji being Anupama well-wisher (especially after his stand wrt to Anu's partnership with Anuj) nor will I deny his love for her. But what is the use when his actions, words and gestures have neither came on appropriate timing, nor with required intensity.
