Yea You are right! I have one on my left hand and my husband has on his right. Its the red nadachari dhaaga.

yes usually nadachhadi/ kalava in hindi- like how you explained on right & left. Usually during Puja.

Though many add shivji or hanumanji mandir's kali rakshapotli (at least in ahmedabad, we used to get from Camp Hanuman mandir or from Old city one.) Some people wear black dhaga as neckless too.

Am sure quite a prevalent tradition across the country.

Like how for young babies they add black & gold/silver/orange beads bracelets/ necklaces.
