Even if poor people know about contraceptives, they keep producing babies. Lack of education and lot of other things. I understand all those reasons. And yet I am always baffled at having so many kids when you can’t afford to feed them. And here Afghanistan was going through a war. Poor kids don’t deserve this.
It should be worldwide comparing to have less kids. This is just bizarre. I was reading up on rohingyas and how their population growth is a matter of concern for every country taking them in.

In Islam (extreme ones), most people believe that childbirth is God given so they don’t believe in abortion or using control. Infact many believe in producing as many kids they can. Which is why you will see extremists have multiple wives and so many kids.. ( 6-7 nahi, even 30 kids; Its said Osama had 24 kids )

(in general the ones I know, it might be cultural and not the norm for all Muslims across the world. But it’s a belief true for many, especially the conservative and traditional ones).

I doubt Ozzama had only religious reasons for producing so many kids. After the 2010 strike in Abottabad which killed him a stash of p0rn was recovered from his den among other things.

But yes, from what I know.. many people do think that using a condom is haram.

You may even find Hindus that believe in these things but the belief is not as widespread. In Hinduism there are other issues - like sleeping outside the house when a girl is on her periods and not using pads etc. Again its mostly prevalent in rural areas but it does exist.

I think religion is a complicated subject for most people.

It's apart of their identity and many don't know how to interpret the texts (be it any religion). They mostly don't have any one to guide them on it.

One of my closest friends, she is an Indian Muslim (though she has never lived in India, still lives in the gulf).. she is quite well educated and is a working woman. I remember in highschool she wanted to learn guitar but she never did as she was confused about music being haram in Islam (she didn't even wear a hijab back then and isn't someone you would call conservative - and Oman is a very modern country, especially by Islamic standards).

I remember watching a movie called, Prayers for Bobby (the movie is based on a true story). A teen, Bobby - church going, loved by all is closeted gay. His parents don't accept it as it goes agains their Biblical beliefs when he comes out. His family cuts him off when he decides to live his life - he kills himself because of it. The service at Church at his funeral is so bad as they blame him as he has sinned.

His mom, devastated. .. goes through his diary and is so conflicted because of her beliefs.. she also joins the church he has started going to - that welcome people of all sexual orientations. She questions the father that as per the bible a man that lays in bed in another should be put to death.

The father replies that the bible is written years later after Christ by men at a different time - it even says the same for someone who eats seashells or kids who disobey their parents - they should be stoned - we don't take that literally - do we? She is astounded.

It's not common anymore though. Nowadays people hardly follow any of these except maybe not touching pickle jars and stuff.

Urban areas of course.. but it’s still there. I remember my friend once told me her husband taunts her at times saying that in olden days women wouldn’t touch her husband when they were on periods etc. It’s still part of the psyche.

In rural areas, not so much. Only 29% of the Indian population is still urban. Women are still made to sleep in sheds away from home. There was a girl I met volunteering for an NGO. She had her ovaries infected and destroyed because she used to sleep in cow sheds and used hay for her periods. Many girls drop out of school because of periods. It’s a big issue.
