Because - if people do this for silly things - it shows intolerance and also muffles up the voices that actually need to be heard.
Just like Tanmay Bhatt posted silly things on his snapchat for Sachin Tendulkar and Lata Mangeshkar.. people took it to the streets burning his effigies.
Also people need to show some tolerance also.
The things is now, people don't take these trends seriously. It defeats the purpose of these hashtags.
Now everyone takes Metoo movement also with a grain of salt (Mahima Kukreja was the one who started this in India and came out that she was lying)
How does it show intolerance? Plenty of people essentially "boycott" various businesses for various different reasons all the time, just without using that specific word.
I remember some time back there was some controversy regarding a certain American fast food chain's owners making homophobic comments, so many members of the LGBT community and some other liberals there decided to stop spending their money on that business... would you say that's "intolerant" too?
How I see it, this is really a case of your rights ending where others' begin. People have every right to boycott and urge others to boycott things they don't like. Whether or not others join is again their choice, but as long as there is no serious threat to the safety of anyone involved, people boycotting and asking others to boycott things are doing nothing wrong, in whichever context.
