It was a tide washing powder ad. Sanju was the shirt, his life was dirt and Hirani was tide.

I think people realised it late and the movie made all profit. But somewhere I think it was because of RK's brilliant performance and Indians urge to know what had actually happened. After one year we realised it was a PR exercise. Hats off to Rajkumar Hirani for brilliantly executing this whitewash.
