Shouldn't we feel bad for Devdas?

I have recently realized that this forum has a special "love" for Devdas. Not just SRK's Devdas. Even Dilip Kumar's Devdas. Since it's not just blind SRK fan girling, I thought of making a topic on it.

I've often seen the character of Devdas get alot of shit. People call him a pathetic loser (which tbh he is) who didn't deserve either Paro or Chandramukhi.

Whether it's the novel or the movie adaptations (except Dev.D which has a bit different story and ending), Devdas is a really tragic character. I don't think we're supposed to judge this guy considering the fate he meets in the end.

So this is a guy who loves Paro but blows it up by arriving too late to pick her up. He shows up at her wedding and asks her to runaway with him. I understand why Paro can't do that because of the time this movie is set in.

Running away would've made her family suffer shame and humiliation in front of the society for the rest of their lives. Heck it's still a big deal today so what can we expect from 1900s.

But why isn't Devdas given the same excuse? How people expect Devdas to settle with Chandramukhi who is a courtesan...who runs her own brothel? Do people actually realize what her profession was in the movie and when it was set in?

And why do people think it's easy to move on? Nobody wants to be in depression. Devdas turned to alcohol and got addicted to it. It was a way for him to move on from Paro. Again its common for people to turn to alcohol and drugs to deal with sadness.

He knew he was addicted but again this movie was set in a time when rehabilitation centers didn't exist and mental illness wasn't a concept. His family also gave him a cold shoulder and didn't support when he needed them. Devdas, Paro and Chandramukhi were victims of the age they were born in. Their fates were always doomed.

So don't see them through the lenses of today's time and say why he/she couldn't do this or that.

No but that wasnt my point, my point is he can do whatever he want far away from the family or loved ones, because then everyone will have to suffer with him, so it wise he goes to a country where no one can see what he is doing there and just let him drink and die or whatever he wants to do. I will find a way to make him leave.

Ghar ka mohal kharab hojata hai having such musibat in your life and family.

I don’t think Devdas gets all that hate only because of drowning himself in the alcohol. At least speaking from my POV, I hate how he was a loser to begin with. He first listens to his dad and lets go of Paro even when Paro, being a girl of 1900s and all that, was willing to go the extra mile for him. He writes a letter to her to move on and goes away from there. But then when she was about to get married ,he comes back and asks her to run away from her marriage. What is the guarantee that after she runs away from her marriage he wasn’t going to let go of her again with the next obstacle he faces?

He is a flawed character. And that's what makes him realistic, believable and IMO likeable too. I hate all those whitewashed Harlequin Raj-Rahul characters of Bollywood (who are all misogynistic ******** underneath their so called romantic facade). Devdas was a flawed and multidimensional character. He is everything people say -- he is narcissistic, psychopathic, sometimes ruthless, but he is also a lover, a passionate soul and a struggling man. All of that makes him a compelling character to me.

Also sorta unpopular opinion, but I think Devdas was one of SRK's best performances in his whole career. I am not a fan of him, otherwise.
